Not only did the league have a great draft class, the rest of the sports world has been pretty blah. The NHL\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/stanley-cup-final-connor-mcdavid-leads-oilers-in-game-5-thriller-to-send-series-back-to-edmonton-025438371.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stanley Cup Finals<\/a> are showing some excitement as the Edmonton Oilers and superstar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-mcdavid-leaves-game-with-left-leg-injury-in-oilers-finale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connor McDavid<\/a> try to charge back from a 3-0 deficit against the Florida Panthers, but that\u2019s about it.<\/p>\n<p>The NBA playoffs, meanwhile, were about as boring as watching paint that\u2019s already dried, aside from a decent Western Conference Finals series.<\/p>\n<p>Major League Baseball\u2019s regular season is basically just a 162-game march to a likely Dodgers-Yankees World Series in another four months. The most exciting moment in the NASCAR calendar thus far has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-racers-kyle-busch-ricky-stenhouse-jr-get-intense-fistfight-nascar-star-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fight after a race<\/a> that didn\u2019t affect the championship standings. Major League Soccer still hasn\u2019t moved beyond cult status.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the Olympics \u2014 but the biggest interest surrounding the Games, at least in the U.S., has been about the WNBA and star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/caitlin-clark-snubbed-left-off-olympics-womens-basketball-roster-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caitlin Clark being snubbed<\/a> for Team USA.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, several prime rookies entered the WNBA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-gets-involved-caitlin-clarks-salary-controversy-wnba-draft-push-new-boundaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">via this year\u2019s draft<\/a>, most notably Clark out of the University of Iowa and Angel Reese out of LSU. They were the main reasons this year\u2019s women\u2019s NCAA tournament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/sports\/women-outshine-men-ncaa-final-tv-viewership-rcna147112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outdrew the men\u2019s<\/a>, and for good reason: It was more exciting. The momentum was there. The rivalry was set.<\/p>\n<p>For her part, Clark has played admirably for the Indiana Fever, a moribund team that needs a few more pieces before they\u2019re competitive. Reese\u2019s Chicago Sky, meanwhile, have the opportunity to compete. They also have the opportunity to self-sabotage, something they\u2019ve been especially adept at doing of late.<\/p>\n<p>After a loss to Clark\u2019s Indiana Fever on June 1 in a game where the biggest news <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-caitlin-clark-hit-violent-cheap-shot-angel-reese-appears-celebrate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was a hard off-ball foul<\/a> on Clark by the Sky\u2019s Chennedy Carter \u2014 and Reese appearing to celebrate from the sidelines. Things have gone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/angel-reese-team-shambles-lose-4-last-5-not-like-fun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very much south<\/a> in the interim, with the Sky losing six of their last seven to fall to 4-9.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, and despite the fact that Reese\u2019s celebration of the foul (and subsequent reaction to it, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-throws-jab-caitlin-clark-cheap-shot-backlash-go-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anything but apologetic<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/shapiro-when-lies-matter-more-than-facts\/\" title=\"SHAPIRO: When Lies Matter More Than Facts\">establishment media outlets<\/a> have fallen all over themselves to make her out to be the victim. It\u2019s become a sociopolitical issue: Clark is white and straight, whereas the stereotype of the WNBA is that the players are black and lesbian.<\/p>\n<p>(For what it\u2019s worth, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/who-is-camron-fletcher-angel-reese-8599364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reese<\/a> was dating male Florida State basketball\u2019s Cam\u2019Ron Fletcher before breaking up in March, before the NCAA tournament, People magazine reported. Since then, she\u2019s been single, according to the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/nba\/angel-reese-opens-up-about-rumored-love-interests-before-caitlin-clark-rematch\/ar-BB1oidc7#:~:text=Reese%20let%20fans%20know%20when%20she%20was%20in,Since%20then%2C%20Reese%20has%20asserted%20that%20she%27s%20single.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Athlon Sports<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/after-banning-free-movies-china-sends-communist-propaganda-to-hong-kong-theaters\/\" title=\"After Banning Free Movies, China Sends Communist Propaganda to Hong Kong Theaters\">good guy\/bad guy narrative<\/a>, must somehow come down to privilege these days. And yet, despite the fawning media attention, Reese <em>still<\/em> isn\u2019t happy with the way she\u2019s being covered.<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere was that more evident than in an interview attempt after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/wnba-scrambles-deal-angel-reese-ejection-controversy-takes-next-step\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky\u2019s<\/a> practice on Tuesday, when even a simpatico columnist had to admit the word \u201ccatastrophe\u201d could best sum it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn occasionally friendly columnist went to Sky practice Tuesday eager to make rookie Angel Reese\u2019s acquaintance, pull her aside from the cameras and microphones and speak with her about being 22 and taking a huge bite out of life \u2014 new job, new city, happiness, homesickness, fears, dreams,\u201d wrote Steve Greenberg of the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/chicago-sky-and-wnba\/2024\/06\/18\/skys-angel-reese-doesnt-feel-like-talking-and-thats-ok-is-she\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago Sun-Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few questions in, it was clear that one- or two-word answers were the order of the day. And that something was wrong, even though Reese had essentially ignored a couple of questions by saying, dismissively, \u2018I\u2019m good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she wasn\u2019t good, was she?\u201d Greenberg continued. \u201cShe was asked if she knew why the conversation, such as it was, was off to such an inauspicious start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how y\u2019all like to twist my words, so I\u2019m just keeping it short and sweet,\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n<p>No, no, the reporters said \u2014 they were there to try and get her side of the story! No word-twisting involved. Nothing like that.<\/p>\n<p>Uh-uh. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-chennedy-carter-fire-fans-fact-check-alleged-harassment-joke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reese<\/a> was having none of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t trust any of y\u2019all,\u201d she said, according to Greenberg. \u201cSo I\u2019m just letting you know \u2014 short and sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And mind you, Greenberg basically spent half the article apologizing for Reese\u2019s problems \u2014 on and off the court \u2014 since entering the league.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a WNBA rookie, she said \u2018not just one person\u2019 \u2014 meaning not Clark alone \u2014 was lifting women\u2019s basketball to new heights, and the blowback was intense,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>(He neglected to mention the context \u2014 it was after she was caught celebrating the meaningless foul on Clark from the sideline, which she refused to apologize for \u2014 or the rest of the quote, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-throws-jab-caitlin-clark-cheap-shot-backlash-go-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she said she would<\/a> \u201ctake the \u2018bad guy\u2019 role, and I\u2019ll continue to take that on and be that for my teammates. And I know I\u2019ll go down in history.\u201d)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Angel Reese believes the physical play that Caitlin Clark has experienced isn\u2019t new to the WNBA<\/p>\n<p>Just more \ud83d\udc40<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason why we\u2019re watching women\u2019s basketball is not just because of 1 person. It\u2019s because of me, too. I want y\u2019all to realize that\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3fNUxipTTD\">https:\/\/t.co\/3fNUxipTTD<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1YbGG4mWuL\">pic.twitter.com\/1YbGG4mWuL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 GNSportsTV (@GNSportsTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GNSportsTV\/status\/1797738966076273020?\">June 3, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He then papered over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-viciously-slaps-caitlin-clark-brutal-foul-rivalry-heats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">foul Reese committed<\/a> against Clark on Sunday by focusing on the reaction, rather than the behavior itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Reese committed a flagrant foul against Clark in the Sky\u2019s last game, a 91-83 loss to the Fever that was the most-watched WNBA telecast in 23 years, a few influential imbeciles in the media world clapped back at Reese with a level of outrage generally reserved for someone who drop-kicks a puppy or punches the clown at a children\u2019s birthday party,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd that was before Reese apparently made it worse for herself by knocking the refs and saying \u2018some people [get] a special whistle.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sorry \u2014 \u201capparently\u201d made it worse? The flagrant in question involved Reese literally smacking Clark upside the head as Clark went up for a layup, without even trying to go for the ball. The foul wasn\u2019t just cheap and nasty, it was wholly unnecessary: Reese\u2019s teammate managed to block the ill-conceived layup from Clark rather easily without, you know, trying to take Clark\u2019s head off:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Angel Reese takes total swing at Caitlin Clark\u2019s head, gets flagrant foul. They hate Clark because she\u2019s white. Fever have to get an enforcer or Clark\u2019s going to be knocked out for the year on one of these plays: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/865KEUpLUv\">pic.twitter.com\/865KEUpLUv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClayTravis\/status\/1802402503792775309?\">June 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But, yes \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-defends-vicious-hit-caitlin-clark-blames-refs-fouls-special-whistle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blaming the refs<\/a> \u201capparently\u201d made it worse for Reese. The same way a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/sports\/sixers\/Allen-Iverson-practice-rant-video-Philadelphia-76ers-press-conference.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2002 rant<\/a> by the NBA\u2019s Philadelphia 76ers then-star Allen Iverson about \u201clisten, we\u2019re talking about <em>practice<\/em>\u201d made people \u201capparently\u201d question his work ethic.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, of course, Greenberg brought out the doozy: It\u2019s not Reese\u2019s fault she has a bad rep, it\u2019s all the online haters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe comments directed at Reese on social media \u2014 which she uses avidly, and where she has cultivated a giant following \u2014 have, unfailingly, scraped the bottom of the barrel at every turn,\u201d he said. \u201cWe could argue the size of her role in rubbing people the wrong way, but the racist slurs and tropes used against her are uncalled-for and awful and would put anyone on guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh please. First, let me let Greenberg in on something that he should probably know: Social media brings out the worst in people \u2014 but they\u2019re generally random trolls in their parents\u2019 basement.<\/p>\n<p>Angel Reese is a candidate for WNBA Rookie of the Year and she\u2019s behaving like this. Caitlin Clark is getting the same blowback \u2014 if perhaps not as strongly because she doesn\u2019t say stupid things every third second \u2014 and do we hear about this? No, of course not. We get \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/view-hosts-show-know-sports-know-politics-absurd-take-caitlin-clark-cheap-shot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The View<\/a>\u201d calling her privileged for taking a hard, unnecessary foul.<\/p>\n<p>Greenberg, moreover, tries to humanize Reese by including a quote from Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon in which she urged us all to please, think of poor, sensitive Angel Reese and how she\u2019s coping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think sometimes we fail to realize what the athlete might think,\u201d Weatherspoon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is she thinking? How does she feel? I think sometimes we just fail to realize that because it\u2019s almost like every time she speaks, there\u2019s something wrong with what she says. There\u2019s something wrong with what she does. That\u2019s what it seems like. But what we do here as a team, that\u2019s really all that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, I\u2019m rooting for Angel Reese. I\u2019m sure if I were important enough, Mr. Greenberg would include me among those \u201cinfluential imbeciles in the media world clapped back at Reese with a level of outrage generally reserved for someone who drop-kicks a puppy or punches the clown at a children\u2019s birthday party\u201d because I\u2019ve dared to criticize her behavior. However, villains are good for sport \u2014 provided, of course, they keep that villainy in check.<\/p>\n<p>The NBA had Isaiah Thomas. The NFL had Bill Belichick and Al Davis. NASCAR had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dale-earnhardts-grandson-reveals-phenomenal-tribute-planned-daytona-500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dale Earnhardt<\/a>. The UFC has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/conor-mcgregor-posts-police-investigation-raging-government-knife-attack-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conor McGregor<\/a>. You may hate them, but they make sports fun.<\/p>\n<p>However, the thing is that they all behaved within normal parameters of human behavior, at least most of the time. We don\u2019t have a huge sample size for Angel Reese, but it doesn\u2019t look good so far. Yet, the establishment media is willing to cover for her. And what\u2019s her thank-you gesture?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t trust any of y\u2019all.\u201d Six words that say it all. So much for the summer of Clark v. Reese. Now it\u2019s looking more like Reese v. a fawning media.
