In response, DeSantis signed legislation that prohibits children under \u200b14 from having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sickening-video-shows-antifa-allegedly-stab-4-trump-supporters-in-washington-dc\/\" title=\"Sickening Video Shows Antifa Allegedly Stab 4 Trump Supporters in Washington DC\">social media accounts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-left-unmasks-its-desire-to-destroy-families-and-the-nation-with-sexual-chaos\/\" title=\"The Left Unmasks Its Desire To Destroy Families \u2014 And The Nation \u2014 With Sexual Chaos\">requires parental consent<\/a> for users\u200b aged 14 and 15. Similarly, Newsom signed a law in 2019 allowing California <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/calif-gov-newsom-announces-2b-plan-to-reopen-schools-by-spring\/\" title=\"Calif. Gov. Newsom announces B plan to reopen schools by spring\">school districts<\/a> to\u2062 restrict or ban the use\u2063 of smartphones in\u200d schools. These actions show a rare bipartisan approach towards addressing the issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nbc-news-poll-majority-of-americans-think-social-media-does-more-to-divide-us-than-bring-us-together\/\" title=\"NBC News Poll: Majority Of Americans Think Social Media Does More To Divide Us Than Bring Us Together\">social media usage<\/a> among children, emphasized by California Republican Assemblyman Josh Hoover who noted the importance of bipartisan unity to protect youths in\u2062 an otherwise partisan\u200d political climate.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Florida<\/a>\u2019s Republican governor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>California<\/a>\u2019s Democratic governor rarely find common ground, but they may have found their bipartisan commonplace: social media restrictions for children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ron-desantis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Govs. Ron DeSantis <\/a>(R-FL) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gavin-newsom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Gavin Newsom<\/a> (D-CA) have agreed in recent weeks that social media poses some inherent harm to children and should be restricted. The agreement likely won\u2019t push away the pair\u2019s feud, but it \u201cunderscores the scope of this problem,\u201d according to California Republican Assemblyman Josh Hoover. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s hyperpartisan age, where we see just these hyperpartisan battles between governors and legislatures and politicians, I think it\u2019s really encouraging to see an area where we can actually come together as leaders \u2014 regardless of party, and work on something to help our kids,\u201d Hoover told <em>Politico<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2024\/03\/25\/governor-desantis-signs-legislation-to-protect-children-and-uphold-parental-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>signed a law<\/a> that prohibited minors under 14 from having social media accounts and restricted children aged 14 and 15 by requiring their accounts to have parental consent. In 2019, Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/california-governor-newsom-wants-smartphone-restrictions-classrooms-rcna157825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>signed a law<\/a> that gave California school districts the authority to limit or outright ban smartphones from being used by children during the day. <\/p>\n<p>While California\u2019s law came four years before Florida\u2019s, a DeSantis spokesman said, \u201cKeep copying Florida, California!\u201d <\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Following Monday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3047146\/surgeon-general-calls-warning-label-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>announcement<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/vivek-murthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>surgeon general<\/a> that social media should be given a tobacco-like warning about the harms it could inflict on children, Newsom reignited his push for school districts to use his 2019 legislation. <\/p>\n<p>This week, the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation\u2019s second<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cdc-schools-can-reopen-safely-without-vaccinating-teachers-against-covid-19\/\" title=\"CDC: Schools Can Reopen Safely Without Vaccinating Teachers Against COVID-19\">-largest school district<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/18\/us\/lausd-cell-phone-ban-students\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>voted to ban<\/a> the use of cellphones, to take effect in the spring semester of the 2024-2025 school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a school district would be totally within their rights to say, \u2018You know what, leave your phone in some cubby or something, go sit in class and learn, and if you get it at recess and you want to text people, fine,\u2019\u201d DeSantis said last year. \u201cBut they should not be on their phones being distracted from the lessons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each Florida district has been taking a different approach. In one Florida district, students are allowed to use their phones during the lunch period. Another has a \u201cbell to bell\u201d policy, in which phones are put away the entire day.
