Piper,\u2062 in his writings, probes the reasons why God might allow such calamities, including as judgments for specific sins, echoing\u200c traditional biblical interpretations.<\/p>\n<p>the piece \u200ccalls for a\u2063 compassionate\u200d Christian response to help those\u2063 in need, while also contemplating the broader spiritual implications and God&#8217;s potential messages through such natural phenomena.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/washingtonstand\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/washingtonstand\/%20\"><span>Joshua Arnold, The Washington Stand<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 18, 2024 at 9:20am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>\u201cIn recent months, both floods and tornadoes have ripped through parts of the country\u2019s Midwest and Southeast region, upending people\u2019s lives and shattering their homes and businesses,\u201d Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said on \u201cWashington Watch\u201d last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the weather experts, we\u2019re on track for a record in terms of tornadoes this year and anticipating a pretty rough hurricane season as well,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/v519ixa-edward-graham-on-samaritans-purse-aid-efforts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perkins<\/a> added.<\/p>\n<p>While the left is sure to blame \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/summer-heat-wave-expected-scorch-america-prepared-climate-change-nuts-will\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate change<\/a>\u201d for the natural disasters \u2014 both as obvious and non-explanatory as blaming a tornado\u2019s damage on \u201cwind\u201d \u2014 how should Christians respond when our country experiences extreme weather events?<\/p>\n<p>Our instant reaction should \u201cbe offering help to our neighbors and working through groups like Samaritan\u2019s Purse,\u201d Perkins said. Christian organizations like Samaritan\u2019s Purse, named after the parable of the good Samaritan, are \u201con the ground in affected communities with their ministry of aid and relief, serving people in Jesus\u2019s name,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>But even full-time professionals can only do so much. \u201cWe\u2019re even getting stretched kind of thin,\u201d Samaritan\u2019s Purse COO Edward Graham said. Graham explained that extreme weather events have followed one another so rapidly that Samaritan\u2019s Purse has teams in five different locations at once, stretching their resources and scattering their staff far and wide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need volunteers,\u201d Graham said. \u201cWe need people to come out and help serve and love on their neighbors and do it all in the name of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, many volunteers have answered the call, traveling as far as New Jersey to Texas in order to help their countrymen in need. Graham said one neat benefit of working with Christian-based aid organizations is that people are \u201cgoing to ask why you\u2019re here, and that\u2019s when you get the opportunity\u201d for gospel witness. \u201cWe\u2019re already seeing decisions for Christ,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to helping those in need as far as we are able, Christians can also respond to the increasing incidence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alert-severe-weather-pattern-may-sparking-national-pickle-shortage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extreme weather<\/a> by looking for a deeper meaning behind it. \u201cWe need to ask this question, why?\u201d Perkins told The Washington Stand. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on, God? What are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some believers may be skeptical about seeking answers to such questions, and that\u2019s fine. At the very least, it\u2019s healthy to proceed cautiously and recognize that any answer to that question will lack the certainty and trustworthiness of Scripture itself.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is God judging America for its sins?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After all, America is not the chosen nation of Israel, the Mosaic blessings and curses do not apply to the New Covenant in Christ\u2019s blood, and there is no established prophet of Yahweh walking among us to declare, \u201cI will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that your wickedness is great\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Samuel+12%3A17&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Samuel 12:17<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But does this mean we should not seek God\u2019s providential hand working in history, through both human and superhuman means? Not necessarily.<\/p>\n<p>At the height of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-study-shows-covid-vaccines-may-increased-excess-deaths-since-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID<\/a> lockdowns, pastor and theologian John Piper\u00a0wrote\u00a0in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/document.desiringgod.org\/coronavirus-and-christ-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coronavirus and Christ<\/a>,\u201d \u201cIf God has not been dethroned, if, indeed, he governs \u2018all things according to the counsel of his will\u2019 (Eph. 1:11), and if this coronavirus outbreak, with all its devastation, is in his holy, righteous, good, and wise hands, then what is he doing? What are his purposes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Piper can ask this question about a pandemic, I\u2019m comfortable with asking it about any other \u201cact of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a brief 100 pages, Piper sets forth what feels like a complete accounting of God\u2019s providence working itself out through calamity, and he proposes six possible reasons why God could have sent the coronavirus pandemic. I commend Piper\u2019s entire book to your attention and reflection. Piper goes even deeper in his book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Audible-Providence\/dp\/B098YLG6CJ\/ref=sr_1_1?adgrpid=1333708175136995&#038;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.TM5p9vac_XEMdSqfuvZVpO1pEjujSNJAWdrs_FaQk0YsT4XuJz5J7W8FYQjzgyvOLIVHCXXtcLWqntqG_4dt93uqjhJEWesuXG3KKIvXqqv3vzAq569f7Tzfh6DcsgWMLbpDgsrVI0HcRr43kjJC8567ukVrig9NQXH8mOB7Uwc6pM_tXVhcIDG2-nyUB_LZlUg7q8OsXBImh5e1_S3Ydz4osGeUN7GIt5qXM_WFQ_0.lqFjUOr2NELMKWcFzvk16jUnyoH_cm-dnR2km9oT9MQ&#038;dib_tag=se&#038;hvadid=83356975415588&#038;hvbmt=be&#038;hvdev=c&#038;hvlocint=63980&#038;hvlocphy=43405&#038;hvnetw=o&#038;hvqmt=e&#038;hvtargid=kwd-83357117334079%3Aloc-190&#038;hydadcr=15452_13492802&#038;keywords=providence+john+piper&#038;msclkid=740db6204f4d13c8f72cd050dafccda4&#038;qid=1718654389&#038;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Providence<\/a>,\u201d which, as it numbers over 900 pages, I have yet to finish.<\/p>\n<p>One reason Piper suggests for why God sends calamity is \u201cas a specific judgment\u201d for \u201csinful attitudes and actions.\u201d Turning to the Bible, Piper notes that God sends judgment \u2014 illness, specifically \u2014 on those who exalt themselves (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+12%3A23&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 12:23<\/a>) and on those who participate in homosexual intercourse (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+1%3A27&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 1:27<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We might compile a similar list for natural disasters. The Bible records that God sent a flood to punish sexual perversion and violence (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+6%3A13&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 6:13<\/a>), fire and brimstone to punish great wickedness and sexual immorality (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+19%3A24&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 19:24<\/a>), hail to punish self-exaltation and oppression (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+9%3A17&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exodus 9:17<\/a>), and a storm to punish disobedience to His commands (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jonah+1%3A4&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonah 1:4<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This hermeneutic is not one invented in 2020 by John Piper. Nearly 150 years earlier, in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/linc\/learn\/historyculture\/lincoln-second-inaugural.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second inaugural address<\/a>, President Abraham Lincoln applied similar logic to suggest that the Civil War came as punishment for American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-tim-scott-obliterates-slavery-lies-debate-survived-slavery-not-lbj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slavery<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Almighty has His own purposes. \u2018Woe unto the world because of offenses for it must needs be that offenses come but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh\u2019[[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+18%3A7&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 18:7<\/a>]. If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which in the providence of God must needs come but which having continued through His appointed time He now wills to remove and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him. Fondly do we hope \u2014 fervently do we pray \u2014 that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman\u2019s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword as was said three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/erickson-a-profound-unique-event\/\" title=\"ERICKSON: A Profound, Unique Event\">thousand years ago<\/a> so still it must be said \u2018the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether\u2019[[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+19%3A9&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 19:9<\/a>].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, is America\u2019s forecast stormy with a chance of divine wrath because of the nation\u2019s sinful provocations? Without an authoritative \u201cthus saith the Lord,\u201d our answer to that question must be as hypothetical and conditional as those of Piper and Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things we can say for certain. God created the world (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+1&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 1<\/a>), and He governs it down to minute details like causing the grass to grow (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+104%3A14&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 104:14<\/a>). In particular, He commands the winds and the sea, and they obey Him (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+8%3A27&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 8:27<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+4%3A41&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 4:41<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+8%3A25&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 8:25<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As recited above, He does send natural disasters as judgment for specific sins, even on people and nations without a direct covenantal relationship with Him.<\/p>\n<p>And, heaven knows, America has accumulated plenty of sins worthy of provoking divine wrath; we have permitted the killing of millions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tenn-passes-baby-olivia-act-requiring-public-schools-show-students-unborn-babies-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unborn babies<\/a>, systematically dismantled God\u2019s design for the family, and celebrated lies and liars while kicking God\u2019s Word to the curb.<\/p>\n<p>When we read of God\u2019s holiness and hatred of sin, we can only wonder with Piper that God in His divine patience has not judged America more severely.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, we also recognize that not every instance of suffering is the judgment of a specific sin (consider the suffering of Job, Joseph, or Jesus). Instead, we understand that the natural world lies under a curse (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+3%3A17-19&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 3:17-19<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Paul describes the effects of this curse in emotionally evocate language, writing that creation is \u201csubjected to futility,\u201d in \u201cbondage to corruption,\u201d and \u201cgroaning together in the pains of childbirth\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+8%3A20-22&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 8:20-22<\/a>). Much of our suffering is from living in a fallen world with sinners, as sinners, and not always because of some specific sin we have committed.<\/p>\n<p>So, are floods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/drone-fly-shows-happens-wind-turbine-meets-tornado-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tornados<\/a>, hurricanes, and other natural disasters just the consequence of living in a fallen world? Yes.
