This image was reported by a\u200b Chinese news \u200dagency, Xinhua, and was \u2063verified to be unrelated to any recent crashes involving Chilima. \u2062In fact, reputable \u2064news sources like USA Today and BBC reported on Chilima&#8217;s crash but provided no visuals resembling the shared \u2062Facebook image.\u2064 Despite the false claim, the crash that purportedly killed Chilima did occur, with extensive coverage on his funeral attended by thousands. Check Your Fact debunked the image&#8217;s authenticity using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-does-this-video-show-lava-from-a-volcanic-eruption-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show Lava From A Volcanic Eruption In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo?\">reverse image searches<\/a> and confirmed it to be of the Ukrainian incident from 2020. Furthermore, the image was not used by Malawi government in any of their official \u200dcommunications.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"ob-read-more-selector\">\n<p>An image <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100063703459476\/posts\/996135142519925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shared on Facebook<\/a> purports to show a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/san-diego-pilot-discusses-recent-deadly-plane-crash\/\" title=\"San Diego pilot discusses recent deadly plane crash\">recent plane crash<\/a> that killed Malawi Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine other people.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Verdict: False<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The image shows a 2020 crash involving a Ukrainian military plane, according to a news article from China.org.cn. The photo was taken by the Chinese news agency, Xinhua, according to the same article.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The plane carrying Chilima and nine other people crashed with no survivors after the plane\u2019s radar signal was lost, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2024\/06\/11\/malawi-vice-president-saulos-klaus-chilima-plane-crash\/74054228007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USA Today<\/a> reported. Following the fatal crash, a funeral service was held for Chilima which \u201ctens of thousands\u201d attended and included a Catholic mass, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cj77pvmndmjo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook post purports to show a recent plane crash that killed Chilima and nine other people. The photo shows plane wreckage near a forest with a green circle in the right corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBREAKING NEWS: Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima and 9 others confirmed dead in a plane crash. The plane has been found and all 10 on board are dead!,\u201d the post\u2019s caption reads in part.<\/p>\n<p>The claim is false, however. Check Your Fact performed a reverse image search and found the image referenced in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.china.org.cn\/world\/2020-09\/27\/content_76755699.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 2020 news article from China.org.cn<\/a> discussing a crash involving a Ukrainian military plane. The aircraft had 27 on board during flight training near Kharkiv, the report indicated.<\/p>\n<p>The photo was taken by the Chinese news agency, Xinhua, according to the same article. In fact, the opposite is true.
