Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 18, 2024 at 5:34am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>It was supposed to be a win for ethical accountability in the executive branch \u2014 especially for Democrats who repeatedly accused presumptive GOP presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump of using his office to advance his family\u2019s business interests, absent much evidence of that charge.<\/p>\n<p>However, the bipartisan legislation might be killed in committee thanks to intervention from an unlikely source: President Joe Biden\u2019s White House.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Monday report in <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4723312-white-house-accused-of-scuttling-democratic-support-for-ethics-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>, the proposed ethics reform will potentially die on the vine because the folks at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. don\u2019t want the House Oversight and Accountability Committee looking into the Biden family.<\/p>\n<p>The bill was championed by committee chairman Rep. James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, and California Democratic Rep. Katie Porter.<\/p>\n<p>Despite coming from different ideological corners of the political arena \u2014 Comer is a reliable conservative, Porter a noted progressive who lost a primary challenge to the relatively more moderate Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cutting-race-dianne-feinsteins-seat-dem-representative-loses-throws-ugly-temper-tantrum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adam Schiff<\/a> for California\u2019s open Senate seat \u2014 they pledged to line up an equal number of votes from both sides of their respective aisle for the bill after it was introduced last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat careful balance soon fell apart, however, after three Democrats backed out of their previous commitments to support the bill \u2014 vanishing, Porter said, after the White House reached out to her colleagues,\u201d The Hill reported.<\/p>\n<p>Three Democratic lawmakers \u2014 Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-whoopi-doesnt-realize-painful-irony-hunter-biden-rant-maybe-crazy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ro Khanna<\/a> of California, Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois and Kweisi Mfume of Maryland \u2014 withdrew their support on the night before the bill was to be introduced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too partisan a tool to cudgel the president as opposed to a serious effort of bipartisan ethics reform,\u201d Khanna said, adding he switched his vote after looking at \u201cthe content of it and then seeing\u00a0some of the statements that I thought would be used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it was bipartisan enough,\u201d the congressman said. However, he claimed the decision was reached \u201cindependently\u201d and not by prodding from the White House.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dem-rep-says-quiet-part-loud-really-charge-checks-balances-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mfume<\/a>, meanwhile, said he \u201cwanted to see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-democrats-back-out-of-white-house-ethics-bill-after-allegedly-being-contacted-by-biden-officials\/\" title=\"House Democrats withdraw support for White House ethics bill following alleged contact from Biden officials\">larger bipartisan effort<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was under the belief that there would be, and when there wasn\u2019t, I just said, \u2018Let me step off,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mfume also claimed there was no White House interference.<\/p>\n<p>However, that seems unlikely when you realize what\u2019s in the bill \u2014 which is a relatively mild piece of legislation \u2014 and what Democrats feared it would be used for.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation centered around disclosure requirements for presidents and vice presidents regarding tax returns, conflicts of interests and any income earned from foreign sources by themselves or their relatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Comer and I did extensive publicity about the bill. And [during] all of that publicity \u2026 both Mr. Comer and I took great pains to make clear that this is not about any future president, it is about having the right set of rules to restore trust in the executive,\u201d Porter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is, it is about restoring trust in government. Full stop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, \u201crestoring trust\u201d is all well and good unless it can cost you an election \u2014 and Comer, who has investigated the business affairs of both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/subpoenas-coming-biden-family-including-joe-hunter-rep-james-comer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hunter and James Biden<\/a>, could have benefited from some of the disclosure requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor instance, it would require detailing any loans made to family members and documenting when immediate relatives join the president on Air Force One, including whether the travel was for business purposes,\u201d The Hill noted.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you think the Biden administration is corrupt?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBoth situations were raised by Republicans after Biden, while serving as vice president, loaned money to his brother and had his son accompany him on trips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/icymi-james-comer-made-special-addition-hearing-chamber-just-hunter-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comer<\/a> said, without the Democratic sponsors, he\u2019s left with a bill he likely won\u2019t be able to get through the committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to get a bill passed right now,\u201d the Kentucky lawmaker said, throwing his hands up in the air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told my Republican members I would get as many co-sponsors as Katie got, because I want this to be truly bipartisan, because if it\u2019s going to become law, it\u2019s going to have to be bipartisan, right? So I said, \u2018If you get four, I\u2019ll get four. If you get none, I won\u2019t have any,\u2019\u201d Comer said.<\/p>\n<p>Where, then, did the Democrats go?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re supposed to buy that, on the eve of this bill beginning to move forward, three Democrats just happened to realize it didn\u2019t strike their fancy.<\/p>\n<p>It had nothing to do with a recently convicted first son who also faces tax charges that stem, in large part, from income derived from foreign sources. It had nothing to do with the fact that we\u2019re five months out from an election.<\/p>\n<p>No, they were just doing their job.<\/p>\n<p>If you buy that, Hunter Biden has a great deal for you on the Brooklyn Bridge.
