Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., \u201cdoesn\u2019t get it\u201d when it comes to antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Foxx chairs the House of Representatives\u2019 Education and the Workforce Committee. Columbia President Minouche Shafik already has testified before them in April, one of seven leaders for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chairwoman-columbia-university-doesnt-get-it\/\" title=\"Chairwoman: Columbia University 'fails to understand\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-survival-guide-for-conservatives-during-the-biden-years\/\" title=\"A Survival Guide for Conservatives During the Biden Years\">higher ed<\/a> institutions brought<\/a> in to discuss their respective Jewish communities.<\/p>\n<p>A release from the Education and Workforce Committee says the school\u2019s reunion weekend May 30 and June 1 included university administrators exchanging \u201cdisparaging text messages downplaying antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foxx, in her 10th term and gunning for a 11th in November, wants the text messages in front of her committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was appalled, but sadly not surprised, to learn Columbia administrators exchanged disparaging text messages during a panel that discussed antisemitism at the university,\u201d Foxx said. \u201cDean Josef Sorrett\u2019s weak private \u2018apology\u2019 to the College\u2019s Board of Visitors shows that the school doesn\u2019t get it. Columbia\u2019s Jewish community deserves better than this. I have requested Columbia to produce these administrators\u2019 texts by June 26.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The committee has jurisdiction of education from elementary to higher ed for all Americans. Columbia became a boiling point for protests about the war between Hamas and Israel, starting with an encampment in April and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/new_york\/article_a5a28870-07a8-11ef-b1f4-b75bc3a0d8ad.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>culminating with law enforcement needed to restore order<\/strong><\/a>. It drew comparisons to a two-pronged 1968 protest on campus tied to the Vietnam War and segregation.<\/p>\n<p>Even before April, the school known for decades of protests and proudly including such history in class instruction was on the radar of the House committee. Foxx sent Columbia a request Feb. 12 for response to antisemitism and failure to protect Jewish students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later, Foxx was on campus for a roundtable with Jewish students about campus antisemitism. The release says a student told her, \u201cJew-hatred is so deeply embedded into campus culture, that is has become casual and palatable among students and faculty and neglected by administrators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Co-chairs of the university\u2019s Board of Trustees were with Shafik in front of the committee on April 17. Four days later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_01f1743e-005a-11ef-bcdc-9b5bcee28d7f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>she asked the leaders of the school to restore order<\/strong><\/a>, and on April 24 she and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., went to campus and met with Jewish students and Columbia\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A North Carolina congresswoman criticizes Columbia University&#8217;s response to antisemitism, stating actions by a federal committee have been ineffective.
