The dissolution of the \u200bWar Cabinet might signal intensified internal \u200dpolitical strife\u200d and influence Israel\u2019s strategies in both domestic and military fronts moving \u200dforward.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/israel\">Israeli<\/a> Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dissolved the country\u2019s War Cabinet on Monday, a\u00a0 week after his longtime political rival, Benny Gantz, left the wartime unity government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A spokesman for the prime minister<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/live-updates\/israel-war-hamas-gaza-latest\/?id=111174277\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  the press that there was \u201cno more need for an extra branch of government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">PM Netanyahu told the security cabinet last night that the war cabinet has been officially disbanded.<\/p>\n<p>A PMO official tells me that since the war cabinet was part of Benny Gantz&#8217;s demand to join the war coalition, it is no longer relevant since he left last week.>><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lazar Berman (@Lazar_Berman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lazar_Berman\/status\/1802634532593524767?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 17, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The move comes more than 9 months after Hamas launched an invasion of Israeli territory on October 7th, which killed more than 1,200 people \u2013 mostly civilians. More than 240 more were taken hostage by terror group Hamas. More than 100 of those hostages have since been released or recovered, but according to the Israeli government as many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/hamas-hostages-israel-gaza-41432124\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">116<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  are still in Hamas\u2019s custody \u2013 including some who are presumed dead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gantz, a former IDF general who served as the country\u2019s defense minister from 2020-2022, has been one of Netanyahu\u2019s chief electoral opponents for the better part of a decade, but his party joined Netanyahu\u2019s coalition in a display of national solidarity after the October 7th attack. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, he and his allies have clashed with other members of Netanyahu\u2019s government on how to best prosecute the war in ongoing war in Gaza \u2013 disputes over hostage negotiations, a potential ceasefire, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-gantz-divide-c2bdd06ab06dfa59d3da12f13b8127a7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">future of a post-war Gaza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  and the influence of more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ben-gvir-slams-netanyahus-obscene-tradition-of-excluding-him-from-war-decisions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hardline elements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of Netanyahu\u2019s multi-party coalition had been lingering sources of tension months before the official split. He and Gadi Eisenkot, a former IDF Chief-of-Staff and a member of Gantz\u2019s National Unity Party, left the cabinet on June 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even after the defection of the National Unity Party, Netanyahu\u2019s government retains a four-seat majority in the Knesset \u2013 the Israeli Parliament \u2013 although the loss of support limits his room to maneuver between the competing interests of his coalition which currently contains members from six parties. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gantz is seen by many as the man most likely to replace Netanayhu as prime minister \u2013 although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israeli-polls-show-netanyahu-party-narrowing-gap-behind-gantz-2024-06-14\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recent polls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  suggest that his party\u2019s electoral edge is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/for-first-time-in-a-year-poll-shows-netanyahu-preferred-to-gantz-as-prime-minister\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">narrowing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  \u2013 and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-hamas-war-news-03-03-2024-3193becf71b8e5a533d38be7973795e7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">met with<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  top U.S. officials in March to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/taking-veeps-place-biden-to-head-to-europe-for-nato-talks\/\" title=\"Taking Veep\u2019s Place, Biden To Head To Europe For NATO Talks\">discuss humanitarian efforts<\/a> in Gaza and a potential end to the war. That visit was not authorized by the Israeli government and reportedly drew a harsh rebuke from Netanyahu, who, according to the Associated Press, told Gantz that Israel has \u201cjust one prime minister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Israeli government has been under considerable pressure, both domestic and international, since the war began. Before the war began, Israel was sharply divided over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/israel-passes-judicial-reform-in-face-of-mass-left-wing-protests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">judicial reforms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  championed by Netanyahu \u2013 support for his government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israels-netanyahu-down-polls-over-judicial-reform-2023-07-26\/#:~:text=Netanyahu%20won%20approval%20rating%20of,support%20for%20the%20legislation%20package.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">declined considerably<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  and thousands of left-wing activists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-edge-ahead-supreme-court-session-judicial-overhaul-2023-09-11\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">took to the streets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of Israel to protest the decision throughout much of 2023. Those protests were essentially put on pause after the start of the war, but the dissolution of the war cabinet could signal an end to the political ceasefire and a renewal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/iran-nuclear-deal-not-state-departments-focus-right-now\/\" title=\"Iran Nuclear Deal Not State Department\u2019s \u2018Focus Right Now\u2019\">mass anti-government demonstrations<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Netanyahu\u2019s right flank, elements of his coalition have argued that the current government has not been aggressive enough, and have castigated Israel\u2019s humanitarian pauses and provision of aid to Gaza as \u201cdelusional.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe manner in which the humanitarian effort in the Gaza Strip is being managed, in the framework of which aid goes largely to Hamas and helps it to retain civilian control of the Strip in direct contradiction to the goals of the war, has been bad throughout the last few months,\u201d Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/far-right-ministers-blast-delusional-daily-pauses-in-fighting-to-secure-gaza-aid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThis is one of the reasons for the continuation of the war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who repeatedly clashed with Gantz and has long sought more influence over military matters, has already called for an escalation of the war effort in the north. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy group that controls much of southern Lebanon and has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-06\/hezbollah-and-israel-how-hamas-war-escalates-risk-of-wider-conflict\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">intermittently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  firing missiles, and other artillery into northern Israel in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/iran-gives-hezbollah-green-light-to-launch-full-scale-attack-on-israel-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIsrael is in an unacceptable situation, in which a big part of the country has been deserted,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brigadier. General Efraim Sneh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/06\/17\/israel-gaza-hamas-netanyahu-war-cabinet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cIsrael\u2019s forces are stretched thin between Gaza and the Lebanese border.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHundreds of rockets cannot be answered with surgical actions,\u201d Ben-Gvir <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ben-gvir-slams-netanyahus-obscene-tradition-of-excluding-him-from-war-decisions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  last Wednesday, claiming that Netanyahi was \u201cout of excuses\u201d for avoiding all out war after Hezbollah fired 215 missiles into Israel. \u201cYou are the prime minister, and you cannot even hide behind Gantz and Eisenkot anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smotrich and Ben-Gvir were part of the broader security cabinet but had been excluded from the higher level War Cabinet, to their consternation. Gantz was reportedly irritated by the influence they did have over policy and that was one of the major fissure points between him and Netanyahu. Going forward both men are likely to have more say in a smaller, more right-wing governing bloc.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_752021\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-752021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Gallup<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/2024\/03\/21\/majority-in-u-s-say-israel-has-valid-reasons-for-fighting-fewer-say-the-same-about-hamas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">majority of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  continue to support Israel, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/472070\/democrats-sympathies-middle-east-shift-palestinians.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">growing number<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of Democrats, particularly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/12\/08\/views-of-the-israel-hamas-war-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">younger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  Democrats, are more sympathetic to the Palestinian side, with some college protesters openly lionizing Hamas and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/campus-anti-semites-plot-day-of-resistance-in-support-of-hamas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">celebrating the death of Israeli civilians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The war has become a major <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/07\/magazine\/israel-october-7-democrats.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wedge issue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  on the American Left and President Biden has attempted to walk a political tightrope of supporting Israel while simultaneously constraining their war effort. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biden has openly voiced opposition to Israeli operations in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza where more than a million refugees have fled since the war began, and Hamas\u2019 last major stronghold. In March the president threatened to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-slams-biden-for-threatening-to-withhold-military-aid-to-israel-taking-the-side-of-these-terrorists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">withhold military aid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  to Israel and he has continually pressured them to negotiate a ceasefire with Hamas\u2019 leadership, even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jun\/01\/biden-gaza-ceasefire-deal-lack-of-influence-netanyahu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prematurely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  announcing a deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other countries and international organizations have been even less supportive \u2013 last month Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognized the existence of a Palestinian state, while the International Criminal Court (which has no jurisdiction in Israel or the United States) issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hope [Ireland\u2019s recognition of their state] sends the Palestinian people a message of hope that \u2014 in this their darkest hour \u2014 Ireland stands with them,\u201d Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eu-palestinian-state-spain-israel-gaza-6efe351e53761befc2c539c535bbcc0c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  to members of Ireland\u2019s parliament. \u201cIt is no longer enough just to condemn. It is no longer enough just to be repulsed. We must be on the right side of history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These decisions came shortly after the United Nations reduced its estimate of civilian casualties by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/shifting-un-casualty-numbers-raise-questions-can-any-reports-from-gaza-be-trusted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nearly 50%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Previous data had been collected by the Gaza Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas and was accused of grossly inflating the death toll. By most historical standards, the civilian:combatant death ratio in Gaza is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2024\/apr\/18\/israels-war-against-hamas-posts-lower-civilian-to-\/\">unusually low<\/a> (between 2:1 and 1:1) despite the fact that Hamas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/top-biden-official-hamas-using-human-shields-u-s-does-not-trust-casualty-numbers-from-gaza\">deliberately hides its forces behind civilians<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Monday the Israeli military told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/live-updates\/israel-war-hamas-gaza-latest\/?id=111174277\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ABC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  that they currently control about 60% of Rafah, and that the main portion of their military operation there should wrap up within \u201ca few weeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are there to dismantle the military framework of the [Hamas\u2019] Rafah Brigade,\u201d\u00a0 Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, a spokesperson for the IDF, told the outlet. \u201cWe are weeks now just from achieving this goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dissolved the War Cabinet on Monday, following Benny Gantz&#8217;s departure from the wartime unity government a week earlier.
