This ruling comes after a prolonged \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mitch-mcconnell-blasts-woke-corporations-warns-of-serious-consequences-for-serving-far-left-mobs\/\" title=\"Mitch McConnell Blasts \u2018Woke\u2019 Corporations, Warns Of \u2018Serious Consequences\u2019 For Serving \u2018Far-Left Mobs\u2019\">rent dispute<\/a> \u2064between the SS United Kids\u200d Conservancy, \u2064which manages\u200d the ship, and \u2063its landlord, Penn Warehousing.\u200c The conflict started when Penn Warehousing doubled the daily dockage fee to\u200b $1,700 in August 2021, a rate hike the conservancy did not\u2064 accept. Despite ongoing negotiations and encouragement from U.S. District Judge Anita Brody for a settlement, the two\u2062 parties could not resolve \u200ctheir differences. Although Judge Brody found that\u200b the conservancy&#8217;s failure\u2064 to pay the increased \u200dfee did not \u200cconstitute a breach of contract, she upheld that the \u2063lease could be terminated\u200d at will, \u2063as Penn warehousing provided reasonable notice. Now, the conservancy faces the\u2063 urgent challenge of finding a new location for the ship and securing the \u200cnecessary funds for\u2063 the move. The \u2062SS United \u200cStates, which\u2062 launched in\u200c 1952 \u200band once served as a\u2062 symbol of American engineering and military might, remains\u200b a significant piece of maritime history, \u2063still holding the record for \u2062the fastest transatlantic crossing.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/%20\"><span>The Associated Press<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 17, 2024 at 11:28am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The SS United States, a historic ship that still holds the transatlantic speed record it set more than 70 years ago, must leave its berth on the Delaware River in Philadelphia by Sept. 12, a federal judge said.<\/p>\n<p>The decision issued Friday by U.S. District Judge Anita Brody culminated a years-old rent dispute between the conservancy that oversees the 1,000-foot ocean liner and its landlord, Penn Warehousing.<\/p>\n<p>It stemmed from an August 2021 decision by Penn Warehousing to double the ship\u2019s daily dockage to $1,700, an increase the conservancy refused to accept.<\/p>\n<p>When the conservancy continued to pay its previous rate, set in 2011, Penn Warehousing terminated the lease in March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>After much legal wrangling, Brody held a bench trial in January but also encouraged the two sides to reach a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/norfolk-southern-announces-massive-settlement-within-20-mile-radius-east-palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">settlement<\/a> instead of leaving it up to her.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/black-lawyers-group-says-new-york-concealed-carry-restrictions-are-racist\/\" title=\"Black Lawyers Group Says New York Concealed Carry Restrictions Are Racist\">judge ultimately ruled<\/a> that the conservancy\u2019s failure to pay the new rate did not amount to a contract breach or entitle Penn Warehousing to damages. But she also ruled that under Pennsylvania contract law, the berthing agreement is terminable at will with reasonable notice, which Penn Warehousing had issued in March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judge\u2019s decision gives us a very limited window to find a new home for the SS United States and raise the resources necessary to move the ship and keep her safe,\u201d Susan Gibbs, conservancy president and granddaughter of the ship\u2019s designer, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/ss-united-states-south-philadelphia-ruling-20240614.html?utm_source=newsletter&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=news_alerts_06_14_2024&#038;int_promo=newsletter&#038;utm_term=News%20Alert\">The Philadelphia Inquirer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Besides finding a new home, the conservancy also must obtain funds for insurance, tugs, surveys and dock preparations for a move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best hope of everyone involved was that the conservancy could successfully repurpose the ship,\u201d said Craig Mills, an attorney for Penn Warehousing. \u201cBut after decades of decay and delay, it is time to acknowledge the unavoidable and return Pier 82 to productive commercial service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christened in 1952, the SS United States was once considered a beacon of American engineering, doubling as a military vessel that could carry thousands of troops.<\/p>\n<p>On its maiden voyage in 1952, the ship shattered the transatlantic speed record in both directions, when it reached 36 knots, or just over 41 mph, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssusc.org\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On that voyage, the ship crossed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alert-iranian-warships-boldly-enter-atlantic-ocean\/?ff_source=wysija\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlantic<\/a> in three days, 10 hours and 40 minutes, besting the RMS Queen Mary\u2019s time by 10 hours, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/03\/11\/1237529064\/the-fastest-ocean-liner-to-cross-the-atlantic-faces-eviction-from-pier#:~:text=What%20came%20to%20be%20called,helped%20pay%20for%20the%20ship\">NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, the SS United States holds the transatlantic speed record for an ocean liner.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">SS United States Preservation Act of 1992.
