Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 17, 2024 at 1:33pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t a WNBA fan \u2014 or aren\u2019t a big booster of Caitlin Clark \u2014 you might not have noticed how the No. 1 draft pick of the Indiana Fever has been getting beaten up on the court without her teammates making sure that it doesn\u2019t happen again.<\/p>\n<p>That appears to be changing.<\/p>\n<p>After a rough foul on Clark in a game Saturday against her team\u2019s biggest rival, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/espn-responds-nfl-fans-claim-video-shows-skycam-wire-interfering-crucial-play\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago Sky<\/a>, Fever teammate Kristy Wallace came to her defense, getting mixed up with the Sky\u2019s Dana Evans.<\/p>\n<p>For context, this was the off-ball foul by Sky guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-crowds-reaction-chennedy-carter-entering-first-game-caitlin-clark-backlash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chennedy Carter<\/a> during a June 1 game that started a sociopolitical debate \u2014 including why Fever players didn\u2019t come to Clark\u2019s defense:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The league got a bounty on Caitlin Clark <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aY2qlA2SOb\">pic.twitter.com\/aY2qlA2SOb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ahmed\/The Ears\/IG: BigBizTheGod \ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddf4 (@big_business_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/big_business_\/status\/1796957370129563835?\">June 1, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Saturday, Clark managed to get a solid drive to the basket from the backcourt, but Evans decided to get physical.<\/p>\n<p>This time, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-bill-maher-says-wnba-players-hate-caitlin-clark-white-not-lesbian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the star rookie\u2019s<\/a> teammates came to back her up \u2014 especially guard Kristy Wallace.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Caitlin Clark gets tangled up with Dana Evans <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uD8PPoS546\">pic.twitter.com\/uD8PPoS546<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS Sports (@CBSSports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSSports\/status\/1802375548741578831?\">June 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The lack of backup could be attributed to a number of factors.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that the spotlight has alighted upon now that the WNBA is a major U.S. sports league is the inconsistent officiating, particularly as it relates to marquee players.<\/p>\n<p>Several nasty fouls marred Saturday\u2019s game, including one by Chicago rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-defends-vicious-hit-caitlin-clark-blames-refs-fouls-special-whistle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angel Reese<\/a> on her rival:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Caitlin Clark is fouled while driving to the basket <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/U9TvoFUoD3\">pic.twitter.com\/U9TvoFUoD3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS Sports (@CBSSports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSSports\/status\/1802391960210026690?\">June 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But Clark got the ultimate revenge: The Fever ended up winning the game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/wnba\/recap?gameId=401620296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">91-83<\/a>, thanks in no small part to her late-game 3-pointer.<\/p>\n<p>On the Evans play, one might like the Chicago guard\u2019s competitiveness \u2014 but one might also not like the fact that she didn\u2019t even try to go for the ball.<\/p>\n<p>However, unlike other fouls on Indiana\u2019s star rookie, in this case, Clark\u2019s teammates came to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/espn-host-pat-mcafee-stands-ground-white-caitlin-clark-backlash-facts\/\">her defense posthaste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether this is all good or bad for the league depends on your take on the matter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-viciously-slaps-caitlin-clark-brutal-foul-rivalry-heats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clark<\/a> is being targeted by the league\u2019s established players. That\u2019s not an opinion; it\u2019s something that\u2019s self-evident to those who have eyes and a television set.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, the hard fouls on the former Iowa Hawkeyes star have been one of the black marks on what otherwise has been a breakthrough season for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/legendary-coach-slams-wnba-says-caitlin-clark-set-huge-target-kids-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WNBA<\/a>.
