Representatives Katie Porter (D-CA) \u200cand James Comer (R-KY) had introduced the Presidential Ethics Reform Act, hoping to garner \u2063cross-party backing.\u200b The initial support faltered \u2063as at least three Democratic sponsors\u2014Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), and\u200d Kweisi Mfume (D-MD)\u2014pulled out following discussions with \u200dthe White House. While \u200dthese legislators voiced\u200d concerns over the bill&#8217;s potential \u2062misuse against the Biden family, especially ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">2024 presidential election<\/a>, \u2063they denied any direct influence from \u200bthe White House on their decision to retract support. \u2063Khanna explicitly stated his withdrawal was independent, based on his view that the bill was\u200d not sufficiently bipartisan.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Several House Democrats pulled their support from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3012937\/comer-porter-oversight-bill-presidential-ethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>bipartisan White House ethics bill<\/a> after officials from the Biden administration allegedly reached out to lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/3019960\/bipartisan-bill-would-bolster-presidential-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>regarding the legislation<\/a>, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p>After Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced their <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/comer-porter-introduce-landmark-presidential-ethics-reform-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Presidential Ethics Reform Act<\/a> last month, the pair have been working to secure support from both sides of the aisle to ensure its success in the lower chamber. However, those efforts began to unravel when at least three Democrats rescinded their support after they were contacted by the White House, a source familiar told the <em>Washington Examiner. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was excited to come to Washington to introduce my bill. And was proud that I had found three senior Democratic co-sponsors. When I landed, I was really disappointed to learn that those co-sponsors had decided not to support the bill and had had conversations with the White House,\u201d Porter <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4723312-white-house-accused-of-scuttling-democratic-support-for-ethics-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told the <em>Hill<\/em>,<\/a> which reported the news. <\/p>\n<p>The three Democrats who originally agreed to be co-sponsors but later dropped out are Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), and Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), according to the report. The three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-reduces-support-for-s-arabia-in-another-boon-to-iran\/\" title=\"Biden reduces support for S. Arabia in another boon to Iran\">cited concerns<\/a> that the bill was too overarching and could be unfairly used against the Biden family ahead of the 2024 election. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too partisan a tool to cudgel the president as opposed to a serious effort of bipartisan ethics reform,\u201d Khanna said. <\/p>\n<p>However, the lawmakers denied they were contacted by the White House or that it had anything to do with their decision-making. Rather, Khanna said, he backed out after reading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kentucky-gov-vetoes-school-choice-bill-despite-sending-kids-to-private-school\/\" title=\"Kentucky Gov. Vetoes School Choice Bill Despite Sending Kids To Private School\">bill text<\/a> because he didn\u2019t think it was bipartisan enough. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made the decision independently,\u201d he said. \u201cNo one called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to see a larger bipartisan effort,\u201d Mfume said. \u201cI was under the belief that there would be, and when there wasn\u2019t, I just said, \u2018Let me step off.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>contacted spokespeople for the three lawmakers, as well as a spokesperson for the White House, for comment.\u00a0Mfume declined to comment on the matter when reached by the <em>Washington Examiner.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>Porter and Comer unveiled their landmark federal ethics legislation last month as part of an effort to \u201cenable robust congressional oversight\u201d of the White House. The bill would specifically require presidents and vice presidents to disclose any foreign payments, expensive gifts, and loan transactions, as well as tax returns from the two years before taking office, time in office, and the two years after leaving office. <\/p>\n<p>The bill would also require immediate family members to make disclosures of any foreign payments, gifts, or loans or use of official travel means for personal business. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not yet clear when the bill could hit the floor, but Porter has maintained confidence that enough of her Democratic colleagues will eventually support it. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur job in Congress is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-slams-biden-environmental-executive-orders\/\" title=\"GOP slams Biden environmental executive orders\">pass legislation<\/a> that improves our government.
