Instead, federal officials have become eager to slap on cautionary labels to products that are already obviously bad for us so they can parade themselves as heroes of public health in a performative display of nanny state engineering. <\/p>\n<p>The surgeon general is out with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/17\/opinion\/social-media-health-warning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> in The New York Times this morning calling on lawmakers to require \u201cwarning labels\u201d for social media platforms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-353535784\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4713ea347da45c1d650fbbba3ef2edcb fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4713ea347da45c1d650fbbba3ef2edcb\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cA surgeon general\u2019s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe,\u201d wrote Vivek Murthy. No kidding. Last year, the FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/predators-trying-connect-young-teens-170138362.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned <\/a>of an estimated half a million child sex predators scrolling platforms online looking to connect with kids aged mostly 15 and younger. Murthy also explained in the NYT that \u201cAdolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies,\u201d Murthy added. <\/p>\n<p>The global prevalence of eating disorders has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10884122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doubled<\/a> over the past decade, and the increase has been driven in large part by social media serving up pro-anorexic content for teens within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/14\/business\/tiktok-safety-teens-eating-disorders-self-harm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seconds<\/a> of them being on popular apps such as TikTok. But just as impressionable teens undergoing puberty are uniquely susceptible to body dysphoria, Daily Signal reporter Mary Margaret Olohan chronicled how online platforms are similarly spreading gender dysphoria. In her recent book on detransitioners who underwent hormone therapies and surgeries before 18, Olohan wrote that many were convinced they were transgender through online forums such as Instagram. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a ton of content on Instagram promoting gender ideology and more and more transgender-promoting accounts that push transitioning,\u201d Olohan wrote in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Detrans-Stories-Escaping-Gender-Ideology\/dp\/1684515017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Detrans<\/a>,<\/em> \u201cand it appears that algorithms on that platform may be pushing transgender material on users.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0c5ccae2e9799981592943da25750417 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0c5ccae2e9799981592943da25750417\"><\/div>\n<p>Social media\u2019s online forums have substituted real-world community engagement with artificial interfaces, leaving oblivious consumers, particularly children and adolescents, destined to become lonelier than ever. The surgeon general even went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/loneliness-surgeon-general-epidemic-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declare<\/a> loneliness an epidemic last year, highlighting the parallels between isolation and tobacco use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the significant health consequences of loneliness and isolation, we must prioritize building social connection the same way we have prioritized other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/five-ridiculous-attempts-to-cancel-conservatives-and-one-major-solution\/\" title=\"Five Ridiculous Attempts To Cancel Conservatives, And One Major Solution\">critical public health issues<\/a> such as tobacco, obesity, and substance use disorders,\u201d Murthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2023\/05\/03\/new-surgeon-general-advisory-raises-alarm-about-devastating-impact-epidemic-loneliness-isolation-united-states.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, explaining poor or insufficient connection increases risk of premature death by more than 60 percent. <\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean social media ought to carry the government-mandated seal of a public health hazard. In fact, it means quite the opposite. Things that are obviously dangerous, such as smoking, don\u2019t need the government to tell us they\u2019re dangerous with wasteful regulation. Most Americans should know by now to monitor their kids\u2019 activity on social media. <\/p>\n<p>Nearly 60 years after tobacco companies were first required to print warning labels on cigarettes to reduce smoking, statists salivate at the opportunity to pull the lever for labels on any other behavior they wish to deter, such as eating meat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-50d5df8bc1b382d54c08ffb0adcd268a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-50d5df8bc1b382d54c08ffb0adcd268a\"><\/div>\n<p>Last fall, a coalition of scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/11\/10\/scientists-want-meat-slapped-with-cigarette-style-warning-labels-about-climate-change-heres-why-its-completely-asinine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposed<\/a> cigarette-style caution labels be placed on meat products for alleged hazards to the climate and human health. A study examining 1,000 meat-eating adults found labels espousing hazards to climate, health, and pandemics were enough to convince participants to opt for a non-meat meal. Given the success of warning labels at reducing cigarette use, researchers expressed optimism at the potential for similar warnings for deter meat consumption. <\/p>\n<p>A dramatic drop in meat at the center of the American diet, however, offers far worse implications for public health than appreciated by the statist class of academics determined to manipulate behavior. The federal government\u2019s recommendations to embrace a low-fat diet, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/11\/01\/are-so-many-americans-fat-because-theyre-getting-terrible-nutrition-advice-from-the-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">planted the roots<\/a> for the twin epidemics of obesity and chronic disease overwhelming the health care system today after three generations dutifully followed the dietary guidelines.
