The tobacco warnings have been shown to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  \u201cincrease awareness and change behavior,\u201d Murthy said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe mental health crisis among young people is an emergency \u2014 and social media has emerged as an important contributor,\u201d Murthy wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is time to require a surgeon general\u2019s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents,\u201d he said. \u201cA surgeon general\u2019s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The mental health crisis among teenagers has been partly driven by social media\u2019s explosion over the last decade or so, during which the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/teen-mental-health-cdc-girls-sadness-violence-rcna69964\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of teenage depression have skyrocketed, especially among girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Murthy noted that adolescents who spend more than three hours on social media a day have twice the risk of anxiety and depression, and teens, on average, spend longer than this, about 4.8 hours a day on such platforms.
