Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 17, 2024 at 6:30am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Stop me if you\u2019ve heard this one before.<\/p>\n<p>In a much-anticipated WNBA matchup between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky, Fever guard and rookie sensation Caitlin Clark received a hard, unnecessary foul \u2014 and still went on to win the game with a clutch shot.<\/p>\n<p>And Angel Reese, the other hotshot rookie in the league \u2014 this one for the Sky \u2014 is whining about the coverage of the foul, saying the refs have a \u201cspecial whistle\u201d for Clark.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like it was two weeks ago. You may remember this gratuitous off<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-bill-maher-says-wnba-players-hate-caitlin-clark-because-shes-white-and-not-lesbian\/\" title=\"Watch: Bill Maher Claims WNBA Players Dislike Caitlin Clark for Being White and Straight\">-ball hip-check<\/a> on Clark from Chennedy Carter, the Dennis Rodman of the Chicago Sky.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The league got a bounty on Caitlin Clark <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aY2qlA2SOb\">pic.twitter.com\/aY2qlA2SOb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ahmed\/The Ears\/IG: BigBizTheGod \ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddf4 (@big_business_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/big_business_\/status\/1796957370129563835?\">June 1, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The team tried to pretend this was something resembling clean play, an assertion even the coaching staff of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MUuEWI6F3dQ\">Charlestown Chiefs<\/a> might dispute. However, this has been gone over in the sporting press \u2014 as well as in less-traditional venues, such as \u201cThe View\u201d \u2014 ad nauseam, so we won\u2019t rehash it.<\/p>\n<p>Because, thankfully, the Sky decided to rehash it for us on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>This time, it wasn\u2019t Carter committing the foul, but Reese \u2014 you know, the rookie who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-caitlin-clark-hit-violent-cheap-shot-angel-reese-appears-celebrate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheering on<\/a> the viral hip-check two weeks ago.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is Caitlin Clark being targeted?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The play involved Clark going to the basket for a layup. The first thing noticeable to even a useless high-school basketball benchwarmer was that Clark, in all fairness, should have used her left hand for the shot; given that she was approaching the basket from the left side, shooting with her dominant right hand may have been easier if there were no opposition, but with Reese there it lent itself to an easy block on Reese\u2019s part.<\/p>\n<p>You will not be surprised to learn that the ensuing foul did not seem to be a matter of a block gone bad. Rather, Reese decided that Clark\u2019s head \u2014 which, for those of you new to the sport of hoops, cannot actually score a point \u2014 was the more important thing to block. Hard:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Caitlin Clark is fouled while driving to the basket <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/U9TvoFUoD3\">pic.twitter.com\/U9TvoFUoD3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS Sports (@CBSSports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSSports\/status\/1802391960210026690?\">June 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After a slow-mo review, Reese was assessed with a flagrant-1 foul.<\/p>\n<p>While Isabelle Harrington managed to get a mostly clean block on Clark\u2019s shot, Reese didn\u2019t even try. Apparently unaware the ball was even <em>part<\/em> of the play, she smacked Clark across the head.<\/p>\n<p>And again, this was a thoroughly needless foul.<\/p>\n<p>In the June 1 game with the Chennedy Carter off-ball hip-check, Clark\u2019s subsequent free-throw was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/even-sports-media-doesnt-know-wnba-calls-chennedy-carter-rookie-despite-playing-4-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">difference in a 71-70 Fever win<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here, Harrington had the block because Clark \u2014 who, being a rookie, can make rookie mistakes \u2014 didn\u2019t take the layup with her left hand. Reese managed to save her by smacking her upside the head for no good reason. Nice work.<\/p>\n<p>Clark ended up putting the game away with a clutch 3-pointer with just over three minutes remaining, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/wnba\/2024\/06\/16\/fever-sky-caitlin-clark-angel-reese-score-highlights\/74090478007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a>, giving the Fever an 84-77 win.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Caitlin Clark fires and hits her third triple of the day \ud83d\udd25 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/O6O8lLiJtZ\">pic.twitter.com\/O6O8lLiJtZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IndianaFever\/status\/1802400406204448982?\">June 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Clark\u2019s Fever \u2014 the early season favorite for the worst record in the league because, aside from her and fellow No. 1 draft pick Aliyah Boston, the majority of the squad might as well be playing in Albania \u2014 is now ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/angel-reese-team-shambles-lose-4-last-5-not-like-fun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plummeting Sky<\/a> in the standings. Indiana is 5-10 and Chicago, losers of six of its last seven, is now 4-9.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t blame Angel Reese for treating layups like the UFC. Blame the refs, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA basketball play. It was a basketball play,\u201d Reese told reporters after the game. \u201cI can\u2019t control the refs. I guess some people got a special whistle. But just being able to play hard as best as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Look, I can understand if this were the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-england-patriots-one-last-request-tom-brady-will-everything-power-bring-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuck Rule<\/a>\u201d call or Game 6 of the Sacramento Kings-Los Angeles Lakers Western Conference Finals in 2002. But Reese, quite literally, slapped Clark upside the head without making a play on the ball.<\/p>\n<p>Full disclosure: In middle school and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utah-house-moves-forward-with-bill-to-ban-transgender-athletes-in-school-sports\/\" title=\"Utah House Moves Forward With Bill To Ban Transgender Athletes In School Sports\">high school basketball<\/a>, my forte was aggressive (read: rough) defense. I have a few flagrant fouls on my permanent record. I am not a professional player and, before puberty hit its blessed close, I did not exactly have the best control of my limbs. And <em>I would have never done this<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, what\u2019s the problem? The refs, \u00a1por supuesto!<\/p>\n<blockquote data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">JUST IN: Angel Reese appears to suggest that Caitlin Clark gets special treatment from the refs after Reese was seen missing the ball and hitting Clark in the head.<\/p>\n<p>The comment came after the Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky 91 \u2013 83.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we were playing really hard. Rather, Reese has figured out that Clark-vs.-the-rest-of-the-WNBA has become a sociopolitical issue, if just because Clark is a straight white woman in a league where there is significant overrepresentation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-analyst-says-caitlin-clark-hated-wnba-players-isnt-black-lesbian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LGBT individuals of color<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, instead of taking responsibility for a brutal, stupid, unnecessary foul, Reese has learned she can pawn it off on our great national cultural division.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s worse, come Monday morning, we\u2019ll hear the same flapping heads claiming that Caitlin Clark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-view-co-host-says-caitlin-clarks-white-privilege-popular-part-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">profits from privilege<\/a> because the media took notice when Angel Reese deliberately tried to concuss her and didn\u2019t even seem to know where the ball was.<\/p>\n<p>The WNBA is finally having its moment in the sun. And yet, one of its budding stars wants to defend the indefensible as vigorously as she can.<\/p>\n<p>I was a lumbering 16-year-old with a body too big for my reflexes when I was getting called for flagrants in the paint, and I knew why I was getting tagged with them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-angel-reese-chennedy-carter-fire-fans-fact-check-alleged-harassment-joke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angel Reese<\/a> is a contender for Rookie of the Year and, almost certainly, a future superstar.
