He argues that Black\u200b history is American history, inseparable from the nation&#8217;s overall historical \u200bnarrative. \u2064Freeman expressed his views in an \u2062interview with Variety while discussing his role as an executive producer on the series &#8220;The Gray\u200c House,&#8221; which explores themes of \u2064race during the Civil War. He asserts that treating Black history\u200d as a separate entity fuels \u2062otherness \u2063and division, suggesting that instead \u200bof \u200cfocusing on racial identities, society should stop highlighting \u200cthese differences to overcome racism. Freeman has been vocal about these beliefs for decades, highlighting \u2062his stance in various interviews including a notable 2005 segment on\u2064 &#8220;60 Minutes.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/%20\"><span>Samuel Short<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 17, 2024 at 8:13am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Actor Morgan Freeman is once against criticizing the absurdity of Black History Month.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/global\/morgan-freeman-the-gray-house-black-history-month-1236039203\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a> on Saturday, Freeman spoke about his role as an executive producer on a new series, \u201cThe Gray House.\u201d The series tells the story of four women \u2014 a prominent Virginian woman, her mother, a former slave, and a prostitute \u2014 as they spy for the Union during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sign-times-us-civil-war-likely-soon-chilling-percentage-americans-say-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Civil War<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As any portrayal of the Civil War and the institution of slavery will move towards discussions about race, Freeman held true to his criticism of Black History Month dating back from the early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>Freeman told Variety, \u201cI detest it. The mere idea of it. You are going to give me the shortest month in a year? And you are going to celebrate \u2018my\u2019 history? This whole idea makes my teeth itch. It\u2019s not right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concerning the exclusiveness the month promotes aside from America\u2019s history, Freeman said, \u201cMy history is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/massive-lost-city-found-covered-vegetation-site-older-rewrite-american-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American history<\/a>. It\u2019s the one thing in this world I am interested in, beyond making money, having a good time and getting enough sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As previously mentioned, this is a view Freeman has held and been outspoken about for some time.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with \u201c60 Minutes\u201d in 2005, Freeman told interviewer Mike Wallace he found Black History Month to be \u201cridiculous\u201d before asking Wallace, \u201cYou\u2019re going to relegate my history to a month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GeixtYS-P3s?si=AWa1xE8XUyPJOiGu\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Freeman said, \u201cI don\u2019t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history.\u201d Immediately after that remark, Wallace asked, \u201cHow are we going to get rid of racism?\u201d before Freeman abruptly told him, \u201cStop talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you agree with Morgan Freeman?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to stop calling you a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/medical-professor-warned-colleagues-that-schools-racial-preferences-were-illegal-and-he-was-removed-from-directorship-now-hes-suing\/\" title=\"Medical Professor Warned Colleagues That School\u2019s Racial Preferences Were Illegal And He Was Removed From Directorship. Now He\u2019s Suing.\">white man<\/a>, and I\u2019m going to ask you to stop calling me a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/identity-black-man-found-dead-near-obama-estate-revealed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/more-liberal-lies-jon-ossoff-lies-about-kelly-loeffler-after-she-is-pictured-in-photo-with-some-guy-she-doesnt-know-who-was-once-a-klansman\/\" title=\"MORE LIBERAL LIES: Jon Ossoff Lies About Kelly Loeffler After She Is Pictured in Photo with Some Guy She Doesn\u2019t Know Who Was Once a Klansman\">black man<\/a><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Black History Month has been a consistent point of criticism for Freeman, he has also gone after the language used to describe black Americans. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2012\/jul\/12\/morgan-freeman-obama-mandela-batman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2012 Guardian interview<\/a>, Freeman criticized the term, \u201cAfrican American,\u201d saying, \u201c\u2018black\u2019 is beautiful. One syllable versus seven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of any criticism Freeman may draw from this view, he\u2019s certainly been consistent over the last two decades.<\/p>\n<p>In holding it, he\u2019s also espousing a substantial criticism of the \u201cotherness\u201d promoted through race in language and our view of history.<\/p>\n<p>Black Americans are just that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fun-facts-bananas-one-americans-loved-fruits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Americans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is not a separate history for anyone black that developed in a vacuum on a separate course from the rest of the United States. The two are one and the same.<\/p>\n<p>Black Americans fought alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wealthy-white-men-most-likely-to-repeatedly-violate-the-rights-of-others-university-of-texas-psych-quiz-states\/\" title=\"\u2018Wealthy White Men\u2019 Most Likely to 'Repeatedly Violate the Rights of Others,' University of Texas Psych Quiz States\">white soldiers<\/a> for the Union to defeat the Confederacy in bringing an end to slavery during the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>They fought in the American Revolution with white soldiers to combat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/40-percent-british-christians-prefer-not-share-faith-believers-reminded-call-boldness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British<\/a> tyranny.<\/p>\n<p>While American history has regrettably been wrought with low points regarding how we treat one another based on skin color, our founding documents do not create a race-based America with any overt notion of separateness.<\/p>\n<p>David Azerrad for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/the-constitution\/commentary\/what-the-constitution-really-says-about-race-and-slavery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heritage Foundation<\/a> put it well, saying, \u201cThe argument that the Constitution is racist suffers from one fatal flaw: the concept of race does not exist in the Constitution. Nowhere in the Constitution \u2014 or in the Declaration of Independence, for that matter \u2014 are human beings classified according to race, skin color, or ethnicity (nor, one should add, sex, religion, or any other of the left\u2019s favored groupings). Our founding principles are colorblind (although our history, regrettably, has not been).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, since Freeman\u2019s 2005 remarks on the issue, the problem has been exacerbated.<\/p>\n<p>How can a people be united in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/founders-slavery-vivek-ramaswamy-defended-thomas-jefferson-confidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founding principles<\/a> of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness when we constantly feel pushed to put distance among ourselves based on skin color?<\/p>\n<p>Our principles \u2014 not our skin color \u2014 make this nation great.
