The incident, which \u2063involved Flight N8825Q\u200d from Phoenix to\u200c Oakland, occurred at\u200b 34,000 feet and resulted\u200b in substantial damage to the tail section \u200bof the plane. Despite the midair \u200btrouble,\u2062 the flight\u200d landed \u200dsafely without \u200dany\u2063 injuries to the 175 passengers\u200b or six \u2064crew \u200cmembers.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch roll incident is particularly notable because such events are uncommon in commercial aviation,\u2062 and \u2064it\u2062 is even rarer for them to cause significant damage. The incident has triggered further scrutiny of \u200cBoeing&#8217;s production processes, \u200dfollowing a series of problematic incidents beginning in January, including one where \u2064a door blew off a \u2063Boeing 737.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed the occurrence and described the tail damage as &#8216;substantial.&#8217; The National \u2064Transportation Safety Board \u2064(NTSB) is set to release a detailed report \u200csoon, aided by data from \u2062the aircraft\u2019s flight\u2064 data recorder.<\/p>\n<p>This\u200d incident \u200cadds to the ongoing challenges for Boeing, which \u2063has faced numerous safety and production issues \u200dover the past few years.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 17, 2024 at 4:27am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A Boeing 737 sustained tail damage in midair last month in an incident that aviation experts say is rare for commercial flights.<\/p>\n<p>On May 25, Southwest Airlines Flight N8825Q, a Boeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/boeing-737-catches-fire-failed-takeoff-attempt-screaming-passengers-scramble-evacuate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">737<\/a> Max experienced what is known as a \u201cDutch roll\u201d \u2014 where the aircraft tail wags back and forth as the wings rock in see-saw fashion, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/faa-investigating-boeing-737-max-dutch-roll-incident-rcna157145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This was another in a string of recent incidents involving Boeing planes that began in January when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/737-lost-door-ticking-time-bomb-moment-left-boeing-factory-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">door blew off<\/a> of a 737 jet. Since that time, Boeing\u2019s production process has come under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The Phoenix to Oakland flight had 175 passengers and six members of the crew aboard.\u00a0The plane was initially reported to be at 38,000 feet at the time of the incident, but a National Transportation Safety Board investigation showed it was at 34,000 feet.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/authorities-investigate-united-airlines-engine-explosion\/\" title=\"Authorities investigate United Airlines engine explosion\">plane landed safely<\/a> with no injuries reported.<\/p>\n<p>An  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asias.faa.gov\/apex\/f?p=100:96:842248153104::::P96_ENTRY_DATE,P96_MAKE_NAME,P96_FATAL_FLG:12-JUN-24,BOEING\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAA report<\/a> said the aircraft \u201cexperienced a Dutch roll, regained control and post flight inspection revealed the damage to the standby PCU,\u201d referring to the rudder\u2019s power control unit.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA later noted that damage to the tail was \u201csubstantial,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/airline-news\/2024\/06\/14\/southwest-airlines-dutch-roll-investigation\/74098322007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a Dutch roll event is unusual,\u201d John Cox, an instructor at the University of Southern California and CEO of the consulting firm Safety Operating Systems, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/travel\/2024\/06\/14\/dutch-roll-boeing-southwest-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving one that caused damage is unheard of,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you trust Boeing planes?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/southwest-airlines-dutch-roll-boeing-737-max-phoenix-oakland-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a> aviation analyst Robert Sumwalt called the incident \u201csignificant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny uncommanded flight control movement is potentially significant. The fact that this resulted in significant damage makes this sort of a big deal,\u201d Sumwalt told CBS senior transportation and national correspondent Kris Van Cleave in an email.<\/p>\n<p>In its reporting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/airline-news\/2024\/06\/14\/southwest-airlines-dutch-roll-investigation\/74098322007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a> wrote that \u201cDutch rolls are fairly rare in commercial aviation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe movement can stress the airplane fuselage and cause damage as it did in the Southwest incident. Data from the recorder will aid investigators in determining the length and severity of the event,\u201d the NTSB said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cockpit voice recorder, which is currently limited to two hours of audio, was overwritten and unavailable to investigators.
