Rural regions, \u200dwith around 3.5 million residents as\u2063 per the 2020 census, are leaning heavily towards Trump, as indicated by a March poll from the Wall Street Journal showing 62% support among rural voters \u2064in seven battleground states, including \u2063North Carolina.\u2064 Furthermore, Wilson County, which is 40% African American and \u2063previously voted \u2062Democrat, has \u200dexperienced a decrease in Democratic registration, \u200dwith more voters now registering as unaffiliated. This \u2063trend is\u2062 part of broader challenges facing Democrats as they try to connect with rural demographics.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s campaign is hoping to flip North Carolina <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/magazine-washington-briefing\/2951055\/north-carolina-on-team-bidens-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>away<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republicans<\/a>, and provide breathing room in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>case<\/a> the GOP nabs a swing-state Democrats won in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>However, rural voters, who comprise a significant chunk of the state\u2019s electorate, have continued to distance themselves from Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the state\u2019s 10.4 million people, about 3.5 million are living in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-data-for-masked-vs-unmasked-counties-would-be-on-every-front-page-if-it-showed-a-different-result\/\" title=\"This Data For Masked Vs Unmasked Counties Would Be On Every Front Page, If It Showed a Different Result\">rural areas<\/a> of the state, according to 2020 census data. A March poll conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/elections\/north-carolina-election-democrats-republicans-d012db6c?mod=hp_lead_pos8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>  found that 62% of voters in rural areas comprising seven battle ground states, including North Carolina, planned to vote for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>According to WSJ, Wilson County, a 40% black rural county that voted Democrat in 2020, has seen a decline in Democrat voter registration with a shift to an unaffiliated registration. According to the state\u2019s New Rural Project, an initiative led by Democratic officials, more black Americans in rural North Carolina farming communities might stay home on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/election-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Election Day<\/a> or vote for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have grown less competitive in \u201cthe state\u2019s predominantly white and poor mountainous west,\u201d according to the WSJ, and \u201cthere are signs of a growing voter alignment with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-homeland-security-department-illegal-immigrants-should-get-vaccine\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Homeland Security Department: Illegal Immigrants Should Get Vaccine\">rural communities<\/a>,\u201d in the state\u2019s \u201ccountrypolitan\u201d counties near Charlotte and Raleigh.<\/p>\n<p>Despite growing pessimism towards Democratic support in rural areas, it hasn\u2019t stopped them from making efforts to garner votes. Trump\u2019s margin in the state is significantly larger than at any point in the 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/president-general\/2020\/north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>polling average<\/a> in which Biden largely led from February to November 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Trump won North Carolina 49.93% to 48.59% in 2020, just over a one-point margin.
