This decision is supported by the \u200cfindings of the\u2064 city\u2019s Innovation\u200c and Performance Team, which engaged in interviews and focus groups over\u200c six months to gain insight into the current state of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/teen-suicide-and-the-limits-of-sociology\/\" title=\"Teen suicide and the boundaries of sociology\">youth \u200dmental health<\/a> in \u200dthe region and identify areas where the funding could have \u200bthe most significant impact. A concerning\u2064 statistic from the research revealed\u200c that 19% of 10th graders in Seattle feel unsafe at school.\u200c Additionally, a \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/is-allulose-a-new-sweetener-for-weight-loss\/\" title=\"Is Allulose a New Sweetener for Weight Loss?\">recent study highlighted<\/a> in\u2062 the mayor&#8217;s strategy, titled \u201cA Student-Led\u2062 Approach to Mental Health Services,\u201d outlined five key recommendations for enhancing mental\u2064 health prevention, early intervention,\u200d and treatment\u200d based on stakeholder insights.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_79\">\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is directing an initial $2 million toward violence prevention efforts in an executive order as part of a new strategy aimed at supporting youth mental health and safety. <\/p>\n<p>The use of the newly announced funds were guided by the city\u2019s Innovation and Performance Team, which spent the past six months conducting interviews and focus groups to understand the region\u2019s current state of youth mental health and where resources could make the biggest impact.<\/p>\n<p>A survey of 10th graders in Seattle found that 19% feel unsafe at school.<\/p>\n<p>Recent research from the city titled \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/harrell.seattle.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/06\/YMH-Final-Report.pdf\">A Student-Led Approach to Mental Health Services<\/a><\/strong>\u201d identified five key insights from stakeholders and recommendations to improve prevention, early intervention, and treatment for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-perfect-storm-father-blames-covid-19-isolation-for-12-year-old-sons-suicide\/\" title=\"\u2018A Perfect Storm\u2019: Father Blames COVID-19 Isolation For 12-Year-Old Son\u2019s Suicide\">mental health challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The five recommendations: improve awareness and access to the city\u2019s existing resources; expand mental health education and early intervention training; expand enrichment programs that focus on address screen addictions\/ nature deficit disorder; implement proactive screening in high schools; and expand access to therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The $2 million for youth mental health and safety comes after a Seattle Public Schools student was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/washington\/article_4af8a2a4-2514-11ef-b293-8f1ed7460c87.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>shot and killed on school grounds<\/strong><\/a> earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The] tragedy at Garfield and the trauma it has inflicted on our community further reinforces the need to protect and support our students and the most vulnerable,\u201d Harrell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/harrell.seattle.gov\/2024\/06\/14\/mayor-harrell-announces-mental-health-investment-strategy-directs-2-million-toward-youth-violence-prevention-in-new-executive-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>statement<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cThese investments in youth mental health and school safety deliver on these priorities and calls for action from students, families, and educators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the Seattle mid-year supplemental budget, Harrell intends to propose a funding allocation of up to $10 million for 2024 to begin delivering resources to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tennessee-requiring-state-employees-to-complete-equity-assignment\/\" title=\"Tennessee Requiring State Employees To Complete \u2018Equity\u2019 Assignment\">support mental health<\/a> and school safety. Out of the $10 million, $2.4 would go toward initial telehealth services and $2 million would go toward violence prevention. Additional funding would be used to support scaling programs based on capacity and feasibility.<\/p>\n<p>Harrell\u2019s new investment strategy will begin this summer ahead of the 2024 school year. The first mental health spending priority will be the $2.4 million for telehealth therapy services.
