The group alleges that Alsobrooks improperly spent about $18,000 from her state campaign funds on fundraising activities after she launched her Senate bid in May 2023. Alsobrooks dismissed \u2063the allegations\u2062 as baseless during a campaign event in \u2064Lanham, Maryland, suggesting the\u2062 complaint was politically\u200c motivated due to the group&#8217;s connections\u2063 to former President \u200dDonald Trump. NOT A CHANCE\">general election<\/a><\/a>.\u2062 Americans for Public Trust countered by stating\u2063 they are a\u2062 nonpartisan organization and accused Alsobrooks\u200c of trying to deflect legitimate \u2064scrutiny. \u2062The organization awaits \u200cthe\u200d FEC\u2019s investigation into the matter.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>LANHAM, Maryland \u2014<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/angela-alsobrooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Angela Alsobrooks\">Angela Alsobrooks<\/a>, the Democratic hopeful running for Senate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/maryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Maryland\">Maryland<\/a>, pushed back on allegations she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3042186\/senate-democrat-angela-alsobrooks-campaign-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Angela Alsobrooks\">flouted campaign finance laws<\/a> after being hit with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/federal-election-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Angela Alsobrooks\">Federal Election Commission<\/a> complaint earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Americans for Public Trust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3042186\/senate-democrat-angela-alsobrooks-campaign-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"filed its FEC complaint this week\">filed its FEC complaint<\/a> alleging finance violations by Alsobrooks for spending roughly $18,000 on fundraising expenses from her state campaign committee tied to her role as executive of Prince George\u2019s County after launching her Senate campaign in May 2023.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, during a campaign stop in Lanham, Maryland, Alsobrooks did not address the merits of the complaint but told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, \u201cIt\u2019s all bogus,\u201d and instead accused the Virginia-based nonprofit group of being connected to former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could we be surprised that this watchdog group connected to Donald Trump, the same Donald Trump that endorsed Larry Hogan yesterday, is trying to find some way to attack me based on false information? We\u2019re not surprised,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Alsobrooks is facing Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/larry-hogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Larry Hogan\">Larry Hogan<\/a>, the former two-term governor, in the general election. Hogan, for his part, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-wants-vocal-republican-critic-flip-democrat-controlled-senate-seat-heavily-blue-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"has said he won't vote for Trump\">has said he won\u2019t vote for Trump<\/a> come November.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement provided to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, Americans for Public Trust said Alsobrooks was trying to \u201cdistract from the legitimate scrutiny of her campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAPT is an independent, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) that has filed complaints against Republicans and Democrats,\u201d founder and Executive Director Caitlin Sutherland said. \u201cMs. Alsobrooks has decided to launch unsubstantiated allegations to distract from the legitimate scrutiny of her campaign while failing to offer any evidence that our complaint is inaccurate. We look forward to the FEC\u2019s forthcoming investigation into the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Annie Talley, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/troop-finishes-eagle-scout-project-of-boy-scout-who-died-before-completion\/\" title=\"Troop completes Eagle Scout project for fallen Boy Scout\">nonprofit group\u2019<\/a>s president and secretary, does have past connections to Trump\u2019s orbit, having <a href=\"https:\/\/fedsoc.org\/contributors\/annie-donaldson-talley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"served in his administration\">served in his administration<\/a> from 2017 to 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s illegal for a candidate to use pre-existing state campaign funds to jumpstart their race for federal office,\u201d Sutherland said in announcing their FEC complaint. \u201cPublicly available information suggests this is precisely what Ms. Alsobrooks did, and a pattern of payments like this absolutely warrants an FEC investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Alsobrooks campaign has denied state campaign funds were used for her Senate bid and said money paid to a consulting firm was \u201cpart of a regular cadence of payments\u201d to the company, \u201cwhich has handled her county campaign fundraising, compliance, and consulting for years, for services rendered prior to her federal campaign launch and solely in connection with state campaign committee activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>FILE \u2013 Prince George\u2019s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, center, listens during a bill hearing in Maryland, Jan. 23, 2020, in Annapolis, Maryland.
