Alsobrooks, now running for Senate, formed\u2064 the Prince\u200d George\u2019s County Police Reform Working Group in July 2020. The group proposed nearly 50 recommendations to \u200caddress racism and policing,\u200b from which Alsobrooks accepted 46 in 2021. Among these, reallocating \u200c$20\u200c million from police training to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/girl-convicted-in-slender-man-stabbing-case-makes-request-for-early-release\/\" title=\"Girl convicted in Slender Man stabbing case makes request for early release\">mental health facility<\/a> for prisoners sparked particular controversy, reflecting tensions over balancing justice, safety, and\u2062 reform in the community.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/maryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Maryland<\/a> State\u2019s Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/angela-alsobrooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Angela Alsobrooks<\/a> is under fire for controversial police reforms she implemented that critics say instigated a spike in crime. <\/p>\n<p>In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/george-floyd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"George Floyd\u2019s\">George Floyd\u2019s<\/a> death while in police custody galvanized the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/black-lives-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"George Floyd\u2019s\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> movement, sparking nationwide and widespread calls to defund the police. Around the same time, Prince George County\u2019s Police Chief Hank Stawinski resigned after a report was released alleging a history of misconduct, discrimination, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/resurfaced-video-shows-biden-making-racially-charged-comments-2\/\" title=\"Resurfaced video shows Biden making racially charged comments\">racially charged comments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh from Stawinski\u2019s resignation and Floyd\u2019s death, Alsobroooks fell in line with activists\u2019 calls to implement police reform. <\/p>\n<p>Alsobrooks, who is now running against former Republican Maryland Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/larry-hogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Larry Hogan\">Larry Hogan<\/a> to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), created the Prince George\u2019s County Police Reform Working Group in July 2020. In December, the group released a <a href=\"https:\/\/dcist.com\/story\/20\/12\/03\/prince-georges-county-police-reform-group-releases-final-recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>report<\/a> with close to 50 recommendations for addressing \u201cmany of the local and national debates about racism and policing.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>FILE \u2013 Prince George\u2019s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, center, listens during a bill hearing in Maryland, Jan. 23, 2020, in Annapolis, Maryland. (AP Photo\/Brian Witte, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The former state attorney accepted 46 of the police reform recommendations in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/bowiesun.com\/g\/bowie-md\/n\/251176\/democratic-senate-candidate-alsobrooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>saying<\/a>, \u201cI believe that our families deserve to live in places where they have both justice and freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alsobrooks is facing criticism for enacting one recommendation in particular: reallocating $20 million in funds designated for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bob-barr-are-we-living-in-a-third-world-country-no-but-in-some-ways-its-worse\/\" title=\"Bob Barr: Are We Living in a Third-World Country? No, But in Some Ways It\u2019s Worse\">police training facility<\/a> to a mental health rehabilitation center for prisoners. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel if we focus on restorative approaches and restorative practices to prevent some of the low-level crimes that occur throughout our county and within our school system, that we can reallocate those dollars for mental health and other services \u2026 that are much needed within our county,\u201d then-state Del. Alonzo Washington, one of the co-chairs of the working group, recommended in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>Alsobrooks agreed, saying during a 2022 interview with Ebenezer AME Church, \u201cAnd so one of the things that we\u2019ve done during our administration is, I decided that we were going to reallocate $20 million away from a police training facility. Now, we still have a training facility, but this one was going to be very expensive. And I have decided that you can\u2019t heal people in jail.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have reallocated, with the support of the County Council who had to vote to approve it \u2014 and it was also on your ballot in 2020. You had to approve it as well \u2014 but we instead have reallocated $20 million. And we are now opening the doors to a new mental health care and addictions care facility that will be opening the doors this July, in partnership with luminous health care, so that we can actually heal our loved ones and not treat them in jail,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alsobrooks made the reallocation as Prince George\u2019s County saw a 16% increase in overall violent crime from 2019 to 2020, a 58% increase in reported homicides, a 19% increase in reported robberies, and a 15% increase in reported aggravated assaults. According to FBI statistics, violent crime in the county has increased 30% through 2022. <\/p>\n<p>During her primary campaign, Alsobrooks faced criticism for not being progressive enough. Challenger David Trone criticized her for supporting the death penalty in a murder case during her time as state attorney, while Prince George\u2019s County Councilwoman Krystal Oriadha claimed that Alsobrooks as county executive hadn\u2019t shown enough support to the LGBT community. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Maryland State\u2019s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks faces criticism for police reforms linked to increased crime.
