It suggests that instead of maintaining these controls,\u2064 the administration should foster competition and deregulate the medical industry to spur innovation and reduce drug prices organically. The commentary\u2064 strongly\u200d contends that Democratic politicians prioritize maintaining power over public \u200bwelfare by employing short-term solutions that lead to long-term problems.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/maustin\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/maustin\/%20\"><span>Michael Austin<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 14, 2024 at 11:45am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>There are few things Democrats count on more to win elections than the general public\u2019s lack of economic literacy.<\/p>\n<p>That way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-is-open-new-york-is-closed-and-ny-has-more-covid-deaths\/\" title=\"Florida Is Open, New York Is Closed, And NY Has More COVID Deaths\">left-wing politicians<\/a> can continue to dangle cash, lower prices and other financial promises in front of voters\u2019 faces \u2014 they\u2019ll say \u201cIf you vote for me, you\u2019ll get it all for free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, to combine two wise old expressions, there is no such thing as a free lunch; instead, to pay for these \u201cfree\u201d gifts, politicians rob Peter to pay Paul.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it\u2019s never, ever as simple or clean-cut as the Democrats make it out to be.<\/p>\n<p>This has certainly proven to be the case with medical price controls, a policy proudly touted \u2014 and aggressively instituted \u2014 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-biden-makes-decision-whether-pardon-hunter-extremely-proud-son\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Biden administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One result of Team Biden\u2019s schemes? There have been rampant drug shortages.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/go.usp.org\/l\/323321\/2024-05-31\/92zsjg\/323321\/1717187146zgOpt4vW\/GEA_GC_056R_MSM_Report_2024_05_FINAL.pdf?_gl=1*7ku1i0*_gcl_au*Mzk2NDExNjU0LjE3MTc1NTQxMDk.*_ga*ODE1MjA2MTM4LjE3MTc1NTQxMDk.*_ga_DTGQ04CR27*MTcxODAxOTAxMi4yLjEuMTcxODAxOTIwMi4wLjAuMA..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June report<\/a> from the United States Pharmacopeia, an independent nonprofit \u201cfocused on building trust in the supply of safe, quality medicines,\u201d these shortages hit a decade-high 125 at the end of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>These shortages are also lasting longer than they used to. The report found that the average drug shortage in 2020 lasted two years, whereas the average duration now is over three years.<\/p>\n<p>Over half of these shortages are for \u201cgeneric sterile injectable medicines,\u201d i.e. EpiPens and drugs of that nature.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Would these shortages go away under a pro-business president?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But what on Earth could be causing these shortages?<\/p>\n<p>As beloved economist Thomas Sowell puts it in his seminal work \u201cBasic Economics,\u201d shortages are a price-created phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>That is to say, if prices were left alone for the relevant market forces to manage, shortages never occur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitically, price controls are always a tempting \u2018quick fix\u2019 for inflation, and certainly easier than getting the government to cut back on its own spending that is often behind inflation,\u201d Sowell wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people use the price-controlled goods or services more generously than usual because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-oil-sales-to-china-could-be-unlawful\/\" title=\"Biden's Oil Sales to China Could Be Unlawful\">artificially lower price<\/a> and, as a result, other people find that less than usual remains available to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When President Joe Biden signed into law the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/explaining-the-prescription-drug-provisions-in-the-inflation-reduction-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>,\u201d it instituted a series of \u201cnegotiated\u201d price caps on numerous prescription drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Back in August of 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2023\/08\/31\/the-high-costs-of-bidens-price-controlled-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reason Magazine\u2019s Ronald Bailey<\/a> predicted the IRA would have a \u201crob Peter to pay Paul\u201d effect, writing \u201cWhile the new price controls will make some drugs cheaper in the short run, Americans will be sicker and deader in the long run than they otherwise would have been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-administration-quietly-trying-persuade-european-nuclear-officials-let-iran-off-hook-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden administration<\/a> and other politicians truly want to ensure that everyone has access to the drugs they need, they should immediately suspend all drug-related price controls.<\/p>\n<p>They should loosen and\/or eliminate as many medical industry regulations as they can within reason in order to foster more competition in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>That competition would lead to more innovation, new businesses and newer, cheaper medicines.<\/p>\n<p>But, as too many of us already know, most politicians \u2014 certainly most Democrats \u2014 don\u2019t actually care about whether or not you get your medication.<\/p>\n<p>All they care about is staying in power.
