The 2013 dramedy follows a sad-sack teen named Duncan (Liam James) forced to spend his summer with his Mum (Toni Collette) and her unctuous beau (Steve Carell, playing way against type).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Things look grim until a local waterpark worker (Sam Rockwell, sublime) provides Duncan with the life lessons, and father figure presence, he craves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s witty and wise, brimming with sunblocked bodies and bittersweet memories of summers gone by.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201cSweet Liberty\u201d (1986)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_750891\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-750891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Universal Pictures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alan Alda\u2019s directorial career didn\u2019t last long. His debut, 1981\u2019s \u201cThe Four Seasons,\u201d wowed fans but by the time he helmed 1990\u2019s \u201cBetsy\u2019s Wedding\u201d Hollywood lost interest in his wry directorial chops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So did audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In between, he gave us 1986\u2019s \u201cSweet Liberty,\u201d a winning comedy with a killer cast, including Alda, Bob Hoskins, Michael Caine, and Michelle Pfeiffer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alda plays a professor whose book on the American Revolution is getting the Hollywood treatment. He\u2019s invited to watch the film\u2019s production but realizes the crew has little interest in telling the story he committed to the page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s being kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The comedy, shot on sunny Long Island, is as breezy as an early June day. The chemistry between the key performers, plus a scene-stealing Lillian Gish as Alda\u2019s elderly mum, make this summer sleeper worth a look. (Except you\u2019ll have to pick up the 2021 Blu-ray edition since it hasn\u2019t been available for streaming for some time).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201dVacation\u201d (2015)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_750897\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-750897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Warner Bros. New Line Cinema. BenderSpink. David Dobkin Productions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chevy Chase\u2019s 1983 comedy epitomizes what can go wrong on a family vacation. Spoiler alert \u2013 everything. Chase and co. hit the road in that grotesque station wagon, finding trouble at every stop in their trek to Walley World.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The laughs are constant, and so are the reminders of summer vacations of yore. Kids bickering in the back seat. Oppressive heat. Relatives you only see once a year, if that. And summer beauties who you spot on the highway and you can\u2019t get out of your head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 2015 sequel\/update\/reboot didn\u2019t snag the pop culture attention of its predecessor, but it deserves a fresh evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why? Ed Helms may be the most underrated comic actor around. He\u2019s a comic chameleon who channels Chase\u2019s EveryDad frustrations to near perfection. The bad news? The film\u2019s hard-R-rated antics and sexually charged sight gags clash with the original film\u2019s more all-American tone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201cDo the Right Thing\u201d (1989)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_750933\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-750933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Universal. 40 Acres &#038; A Mule Filmworks. A Spike Lee Joint. IMDB.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spike Lee knows there\u2019s a dark side to summer. That relentless heat brings out the worst in us, especially when a city\u2019s temperature refuses to leave the 90s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The director\u2019s best film seizes on that truth, whether it\u2019s Lee\u2019s Mookie gliding an ice cube over his lover or the rage served up hot in Sal\u2019s pizza joint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The film\u2019s controversial ending is the culmination of all that heat, but it\u2019s (still) impossible to look away as violence swarms the pizza shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201cStand By Me\u201d (1986)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_750901\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-750901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Columbia Pictures. Act III Production.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Four pre-teens explore the world and learn some harsh life lessons in this poignant tale from horror maestro Stephen King. The lads boast potty mouths and bravado to burn, but it doesn\u2019t take long to see the emotional bruises underneath the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Director Rob Reiner\u2019s gentle touch makes this nostalgic story spring to life. He\u2019s gifted a talented quartet of stars who nail what it means to be young and burdened by too much summer time on their hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s danger afoot, but it\u2019s the unspooling conversations on those dry summer afternoons that land best.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201cGrease\u201d (1978)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_750903\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-750903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paramount Pictures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSummer lovin\u2019 \u2026 had me a blast,\u201d sings John Travolta in the \u201870s musical \u201cGrease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The film catapulted Travolta and Olivia Newton-John to superstardom, and it all starts with a summer fling. Can true love survive peer pressure, cooler temperatures and the mischievous Rizzo?
