This bill,\u2064 HB\u2063 4156, introduced by \u200dDemocratic state Rep. Carrie Rheingans, has\u200d not yet been voted on. \u2063It seeks to align Michigan with the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which aims to \u2062elect the president according to the national popular vote, rather than individual state\u2063 votes.\u200b This compact will only activate when states representing \u2062at least 270 electoral\u200c votes join; currently, jurisdictions totaling 209 votes are \u200cmembers.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans \u200bargue that this change will disenfranchise Michigan voters by diluting their influence in\u200d presidential elections, shifting power to states with larger populations like California and \u200cNew \u200cYork. Republican state Rep. Ann Bollin has expressed concerns that this bill would suppress Michigan&#8217;s voice, favoring larger states and undermining\u2063 the state\u2019s diverse regional interests. Similarly, state Rep. Neil Friske criticized the bill as\u200c favoring \u2064\u201ccoastal elites\u201d and compared the Democrats\u2019 efforts to authoritarian tactics, suggesting that it could undermine rural voices in \u2062favor of urban centers. These Republican members assert that \u200cadopting this proposal would be detrimental, appealing to preservation of the current Electoral\u200d College system which \u2062they\u2062 believe ensures balanced national\u2064 representation\u200b and addresses regional concerns.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Republicans in the <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Michigan\">Michigan<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/state-legislatures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"House of Representatives\">House of Representatives<\/a> are doubling down on their opposition to a Democrat-led bill, which could put the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-secures-endorsement-from-all-michigan-republicans-in-house\/\" title=\"All Michigan Republicans in House endorse Trump.\">15 electoral votes<\/a> in line with the national popular vote in presidential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"elections\">elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The effort comes as other states have passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2967461\/push-to-overhaul-how-presidents-are-elected-gets-more-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"measures\">measures<\/a> looking to align themselves with the national popular vote, rather than their own state\u2019s popular vote, as a way to change the way a president is elected. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have already agreed to a compact which would have them vote in line with the popular vote, rather than their respective jurisdiction\u2019s popular vote, but the combat would only take effect once states amassing 270 electoral votes have joined the compact. Among the current jurisdictions in the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, Michigan accounts for only 209 electoral votes.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s HB 4156\u00a0would place them in the compact, but Republicans believe the effort led by Democratic state Rep. Carrie Rheingans would disenfranchise voters in the Great Lakes State. The bill was introduced last year, but has yet to be brought for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>Republican state Rep. Ann Bollin argued earlier this week that the bill would silence the voice of Michigan voters, decrying it as a \u201cdangerous proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal of this legislation is to force Michigan\u2019s electoral votes to be determined by the national popular vote, effectively silencing the voices of Michigan residents in favor of those in other states like California or New York,\u201d Bollin said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Electoral College ensures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-anatomy-of-a-stolen-election-the-fraud-cannot-stand\/\" title=\"The Anatomy of a Stolen Election \u2013 The Fraud Cannot Stand\">presidential candidates<\/a> campaign across a variety of states, addressing unique regional concerns,\u201d Bollin added. \u201cMichigan\u2019s urban, suburban, and rural communities deserve to have their voices heard. This legislation would drown out those voices in favor of larger states with massive population centers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another member of the Michigan House GOP, state Rep. Neil Friske, said Democrats were \u201cbowing to coastal elites in New York and California\u201d by pushing the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a blatant authoritarian attempt to amplify radical socialists in large cities so Democrats can finally drown out the voices of hard-working rural America. They\u2019ll eat our food, drive our cars, and visit our parks, but the minute we step into a ballot box, they want nothing to do with us,\u201d Friske said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegular people won\u2019t stand for this desperate attempt to undermine our elections as Democrats do everything possible to turn Michigan into their own little version of Communist China,\u201d Friske said. \u201cWe owe it to our sons and daughters, grandchildren, and all future generations to preserve the constitutional republic our founders were willing to die for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rheingans has defended her bill in the past as being about making sure every voter\u2019s voice is heard, contending that if Michigan is not a battleground state, then its issues will be ignored by presidential candidates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople want their vote to count,\u201d Rheingans <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2023\/05\/10\/michigan-could-join-states-in-the-national-popular-vote-compact-so-what-would-that-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> the <em>Michigan Advance<\/em> in May 2023. \u201cThey want their vote to be equal. Right now we have an election of the battleground states in America. I mean, to be honest, we don\u2019t have a presidential election of all of the United States of America. Presidential candidates spend their time and their money in battleground states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan is one of the key battleground states in the 2024 election after being one of the pivotal states in 2016 and 2020.
