The Court unanimously ruled on the basis of legal standing, reaching no judgment \u200bon the substantive \u2064issues in a case that challenged the FDA\u2019s approval of\u200b the drug. This was the \u2062Court&#8217;s first opinion on an abortion-related \u2062matter since \u200boverturning Roe v. Wade in June 2022.\u2063 North Carolina Democratic Governor Roy \u2062Cooper and Attorney General\u2062 Josh Stein voiced\u2062 their approval of the decision, while\u200d Republican Lt. \u200dGov. Mark\u200c Robinson, \u200cwho\u2064 is contesting Stein for the governorship, \u200chas remained \u200csilent. Various Democratic representatives such as Wiley Nickel, \u200cAlma \u2063Adams, and Kathy Manning highlighted the\u200b importance\u2063 of preserving access to\u2062 mifepristone and the authority of the FDA\u200c in drug approval, framing it as a critical component of women&#8217;s health and autonomy.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 North Carolina\u2019s congressional Democrats praised a temporary victory at the U.S. Supreme Court while Republicans were silent Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>By limiting the scope considered on the hot-button issue of the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s approval of mifepristone, the court was unanimous on the legal issue of standing \u2013 saying 9-0 there is none \u2013 and reached no judgment. Thus, the case could resurface and the drug can continue to be used.<\/p>\n<p>It was the high court\u2019s first opinion on abortion since the June 2022 announcement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_cfff3a7c-f3c4-11ec-923c-d769c96dbaea.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>overturning Roe v. Wade<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the state level, Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein joined the chorus. Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson didn\u2019t issue a statement or comment on social media. Stein and Robinson are dueling for the governor\u2019s chair in November.<\/p>\n<p>The following are selected comments from those commenting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_b481183c-2997-11ef-bdc2-cb65bc1dff69.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>on the Supreme Court decision<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s SCOTUS decision is a major win for women\u2019s rights and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/planned-parenthood-sues-after-south-carolina-governor-signs-heartbeat-bill\/\" title=\"Planned Parenthood Sues After South Carolina Governor Signs \u2018Heartbeat\u2019 Bill\">reproductive health care<\/a>,\u201d said U.S. Rep. Wiley Nickel, D-N.C. \u201cKeeping mifepristone available ensures safe, science-based options when women need them. The fight isn\u2019t over. We must keep pushing back against efforts to restrict access to abortion care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Alma Adams, D-N.C., said, \u201cWomen should always be empowered to make their own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tennessee-introduces-bill-allowing-fathers-to-prevent-an-abortion\/\" title=\"Tennessee Introduces Bill Allowing Fathers To Prevent An Abortion\">health care decisions<\/a> and have access to the medications they need. That includes mifepristone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Kathy Manning, D-N.C., \u201cSince receiving FDA approval over two decades ago, mifepristone has been proven safe and effective. Today\u2019s Supreme Court decision means that women can continue to access this widely used, FDA-approved form of abortion medication. It also preserves the FDA\u2019s drug approval authority, which is critical to ensuring the health of all Americans who take medications. While this decision is a victory for women\u2019s health, this case clearly lacked standing, should have never been heard, and demonstrated the extreme steps anti-choice Republicans will take to control women\u2019s bodies and undermine faith in scientific institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee, D-N.C., said, \u201cToday\u2019s unanimous Supreme Court decision is a resounding victory over extremist attempts to restrict women\u2019s health care. But our fight for reproductive freedom is far from over. I will continue to defend access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/abortion-groups-ask-scotus-to-block-pro-life-texas-law-from-going-into-effect\/\" title=\"Abortion Groups Ask SCOTUS To Block Pro-Life Texas Law From Going Into Effect\">safe abortion care<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Deborah Ross, D-N.C., said, \u201cThis fight is far from over. The Supreme Court rejected this challenge based on a lack of standing, leaving the door open to future decisions on the merits. Women shouldn\u2019t be forced to contend with relentless threats to their reproductive health care, and our courts should not be the final arbiter of access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case should have been dismissed by the trial court. While there will undoubtedly be renewed attacks on mifepristone and women\u2019s access to abortion in North Carolina and across the country, we will never give up in the fight to protect a woman\u2019s right to make decisions about her own body and her own health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cooper said, \u201cToday\u2019s decision is critical for protecting access to reproductive health care and confirming that extremist political beliefs cannot be used to stop a woman from getting safe, effective health care. But with Republicans at every level, including here in North Carolina, still working to take away this fundamental freedom we cannot let our guard down.
