Comprising about 1,500 \u2063members on the northwestern Olympic Peninsula, the Makah are the only Native American tribe with a treaty explicitly \u2063granting \u200bthem the right to hunt\u200c whales \u200cfor sustenance. They are the only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/native-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Native American<\/a> tribe with a treaty that specifically mentions a right to hunt whales for sustenance. <\/p>\n<p>According to archeological evidence, this practice ceased in the early 20th century as a result of the population depletion caused by commercial whaling vessels.<\/p>\n<p>After more than two decades of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>court<\/a> challenges and scientific review, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/noaa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> granted a waiver under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which otherwise forbids harming marine mammals, allowing the Makah to resume hunting for gray whales.<\/p>\n<p>This waiver allows the tribe to hunt up to 25 Eastern North Pacific gray whales over 10 years, with a limit of two to three per year.
