Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) were the lone Republicans to cross the aisle and vote with Democrats. Schumer ultimately changed his vote to no, a procedural tactic that allows him the option to more quickly reconsider the bill in the future. <\/p>\n<p>Previous votes in recent weeks on Democratic-led measures for contraception and immigration suffered similar fates.<\/p>\n<p>The IVF proposal sought to enshrine a right to the fertility procedure into federal law and comes around the two-year anniversary of the overturning of <em>Roe<\/em>, as well as on the heels of the Alabama Supreme Court putting access into jeopardy by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-prepare-to-counter-democrats-on-ivf-ahead-of-senate-vote\/\" title=\"Republicans gear up to challenge Democrats on IVF before Senate vote\">ruling frozen embryos<\/a> should be considered children.<\/p>\n<p>As further evidence that IVF was under threat, Schumer pointed to the nation\u2019s largest Protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, on Wednesday voting to oppose IVF over the common practice of discarding fertilized eggs.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) speaks about a bill to establish federal protections for IVF during a press event on Capitol Hill, Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, in Washington. Anthony Pro-Life America advocacy group lobbied against Democrats\u2019 IVF bill and assailed it for assisting \u201creproductive technologies with no respect for created embryos or safeguards to protect couples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill is a solution in search of a problem\u00a0\u2014\u00a0fertility treatments are widely available and there are no serious efforts to curb thoughtful care for those experiencing infertility,\u201d Susan B. Anthony President Marjorie Dannenfelser said. \u201cInstead of serious legislation that balances complex issues, this is a free-for-all\u00a0for the fertility industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans opposed the bill over religious liberty concerns and tried, unsuccessfully, to pass their own scaled-back<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3040704\/republican-ivf-bill-blocked-by-senate-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"scaled back version\"> version<\/a> on Wednesday by unanimous consent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the ones that want to protect IVF,\u201d Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), one of the GOP bill\u2019s co-authors, said on the Senate floor. \u201cUnderstand we could have passed strong federal legislation today, but Senate Democrats don\u2019t want a protection of IVF.
