According \u2062to a 2023 report \u2064prepared by the Perryman Group and discussed \u200dby CALA&#8217;s Executive Director Phil Melin, excessive tort litigation is\u2062 responsible for the loss of approximately \u200d215,000 \u200cjobs in the \u2063state and has \u2063resulted in a revenue shortfall \u200dof over $2 million for \u2063state and local \u200cgovernments. Melin criticizes state government priorities, accusing \u200cthem of favoring the\u2062 interests of the\u200b trial \u2062attorney lobby\u200d over those of small\u2063 businesses, which he claims leads\u200b to \u2064higher costs, fewer jobs, reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/british-pm-sold-out-fish-in-brexit-trade-deal-fishermen-say\/\" title=\"British PM sold out fish in Brexit trade deal, fishermen say\">economic output<\/a>, and increased \u2062inflation impacting all citizens.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013\u00a0A new study claims that\u00a0lawsuit abuse is threatening the Illinois economy and making life more expensive for every Illinois resident.  <\/p>\n<p>The group Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2023-perryman-tort-reform-Chicago-IL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a><\/strong> in 2023, excessive tort litigation cost over 215,000 jobs in Illinois, and cost state and local governments more than $2 million in lost revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the state government puts the interests of the trial attorney lobby ahead of small businesses employers, we see higher costs, fewer jobs, lower economic output and higher inflation that impacts everyone,\u201d said CALA Executive Director Phil Melin. <\/p>\n<p>Melin presented the findings of the Perryman Group report at a recent meeting with state Rep. Martin McLaughlin, R-Barrington Hills, state Rep. Tom Weber, R-Lake Villa, and HM Manufacturing\u2019s President and CEO Nicole Walter at her facility in Wauconda.<\/p>\n<p>The group reports every Illinois resident is now estimated to pay a nearly $1,900 \u201ctort tax\u201d each year to cover the loss in jobs and economic output from lawsuit abuse. The \u201ctort tax\u201d is estimated at $2,497 in Chicago and surrounding suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>A report last December said that Illinois is home to one of the worst judicial hellholes in the country. The American Tort Reform Foundation identified Cook County as the second worst in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Melin said as a result, Illinois had the fourth highest homeowners insurance premium increase in the country since 2018 at 18.5%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does the next generation afford home ownership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/turkeys-lira-sinks-again-as-erdogan-cites-islamic-sharia-law-to-defend-economic-management\/\" title=\"Turkey\u2019s Lira Sinks Again as Erdogan Cites Islamic Sharia Law to Defend Economic Management\">high interest rates<\/a>, we all know in Illinois we have extremely high property taxes across the state, and now you throw on the fourth highest homeowners insurance increase, it makes home ownership farther away for Gen-Z and every single person,\u201d said Melin. <\/p>\n<p>Melin added that the Illinois legislature is making things difficult for employers in the state, including a measure that created new punitive damage liabilities on top of compensatory damages for wrongful death claims.<\/p>\n<p>Illinois Trial Lawyers Association President Sara Salger issued a statement to The Center Square on the CALA report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CALA study is not new. It\u2019s a recycled, dishonest \u2018report\u2019 that has been debunked time and time again,\u201d Salger said. \u201cThe goal of CALA is to protect the profits of their big business funders by spreading the myth of lawsuit abuse and pushing lawmakers for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-6-biggest-lies-youve-been-told-about-the-texas-abortion-law\/\" title=\"The 6 Biggest Lies You\u2019ve Been Told About The Texas Abortion Law\">tort reform<\/a>. There is no correlation between our courts and the economy.
