Goldschmidt, who also \u200cserved as secretary of transportation\u2062 under \u2062the Carter administration and \u200bwas a rising Democratic star,\u200c passed away in his home in Portland, surrounded by family.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Neil Goldschmidt, once a beloved politician known for revamping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/oregon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Oregon<\/a>\u2019s economy but who fell from grace after the public\u2019s discovery of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/sexual-assault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>sexual abuse <\/a>of a neighborhood girl, died at 83 from heart failure on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2024\/06\/neil-goldschmidt-former-governor-forever-tainted-by-scandal-dies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>died<\/a> in his Portland, Oregon, home surrounded by family two days before his 84th birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Goldschmidt\u2019s admitted sexual abuse of a 14-year-old neighbor girl began in the 1970s when he was mayor of Portland. At the time, he became the nation\u2019s youngest big-city mayor, responsible for revitalizing the downtown area, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2024\/06\/neil-goldschmidt-former-governor-forever-tainted-by-scandal-dies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>per<\/a> <em>Oregon Live<\/em>, and he was seen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-red-wave-of-conservative-women-elected-to-congress\/\" title=\"The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress\">rising star<\/a> in the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>FILE \u2013 Former Oregon Gov. (Michael Lloyd\/The Oregonian via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2011\/01\/neil_goldschmidt_sex_abuse_vic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>According to<\/a> Goldschmidt\u2019s victim, who died in hospice in 2011, the sexual encounters between her and Goldschmidt continued until she was 27.<\/p>\n<p>During this time frame, Goldschmidt served as secretary of transportation in the Carter administration. Following Jimmy Carter\u2019s defeat in 1979, Goldschmidt returned to work at Nike, where he was vice president in charge of international sales from 1981 to 1985, then president of Nike Canada from 1985 to 1987.<\/p>\n<p>Over these years, Goldschmidt\u2019s victim reportedly struggled to hold a job, abused alcohol and drugs, and attempted to kill herself multiple times. Her dreams as a little girl of being a Supreme Court justice were far out of reach. Her chatter to people about the abuse she suffered under Goldschmidt got back to him, and he sent handlers to deal with her. <\/p>\n<p>Goldschmidt ran for governor and won in 1986. People were shocked when he decided against running for a second term. <\/p>\n<p>While the statute of limitations had run out for Goldschmidt\u2019s sexual abuse, his victim filed a civil suit against Goldschmidt, and they both agreed to a settlement. <\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until 2004 that Democratic state Sen. Vicki Walker tipped off the press that Goldschmidt had paid a settlement fee to the victim. <\/p>\n<p>The <em>Oregonian<\/em> published a story in May 2004 that included a partial confession from Goldschmidt, and reporting from the <em>Willamette Week<\/em> later uncovered more details behind Goldschmidt\u2019s scandal. <\/p>\n<p>While many members of the public have condemned Goldschmidt, he still had the backing of close friends and family. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeil was a force of personality and the patriarch of our large, blended family.
