These efforts\u2062 were blocked\u200c by Sen. Lindsey Graham and \u200bfaced Republican\u2064 criticism as an overreach and attempt to undermine \u200dthe \u200dconservative majority of \u200bthe Court. The \u2064push for new regulations comes amid concerns about justices receiving undisclosed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/navy-commander-admits-to-being-bribed-by-fat-leonard-giving-classified-info-to-foreign-defense-contractor\/\" title=\"Navy Commander Admits To Being Bribed By \u2018Fat Leonard,\u2019 Giving Classified Info To Foreign Defense Contractor\">lavish gifts<\/a> \u200cand participating in partisan activities, which have \u2064raised questions about their impartiality.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An attempt by Senate Democrats on Wednesday to impose new ethics rules on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3035717\/alito-roberts-secretly-recorded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Supreme Court\">Supreme Court<\/a> was blocked by Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/lindsey-graham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Lindsey Graham\">Lindsey Graham<\/a> (R-SC).<\/p>\n<p>Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) sought a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mccarthy-to-introduce-bill-replenishing-israels-iron-dome-while-democrats-deal-with-omars-anti-semitic-outburst\/\" title=\"McCarthy To Introduce Bill Replenishing Israel\u2019s Iron Dome While Democrats Deal With Omar\u2019s Anti-Semitic Outburst\">unanimous consent request<\/a> to pass legislation championed by him and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) to implement a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3031916\/durbin-left-supreme-court-pressure-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"code of conduct for the high court\">code of conduct for the high court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also includes mechanisms to investigate alleged violations, require public disclosures of gifts and other potential conflicts of interest, and force justices to explain recusals publicly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ethics crisis at the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, is unacceptable,\u201d Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat as majority whip, said. \u201cIt is unsustainable and unworthy of the highest court in the land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The effort came after years of lavish gifts, many of which were initially undisclosed, from party activists, donors, and others to conservative and liberal justices that raised questions about impartiality. More recently, there have been revelations about conservative justices or their family members wading into partisan politics outside their official court duties.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have decried Democrats\u2019 yearslong endeavor to impose such laws over the Supreme Court as an attempt to undermine its conservative majority and an inappropriate effort to govern a separate branch of government under America\u2019s separation of powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis would be an overreach, undermine the court\u2019s ability to operate effectively, and has been a continued effort by our friends on the Democratic side to undermine a court they don\u2019t like,\u201d Graham, the top Republican on Senate Judiciary, said.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Sen. Scott Applewhite)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Durbin\u2019s Judiciary Committee advanced the legislation last year along party lines, but Democrats have declined to bring it to the floor for a roll call vote because it would fail to break the chamber\u2019s 60-vote filibuster threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Any one senator can block such unanimous consent requests.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic-led effort came as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has shifted to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-report-card-overseas-weaknesses-tested-more-student-deadbeats-bailed-out\/\" title=\"Biden's Overseas Challenges and Student Debt Relief\">election-year agenda<\/a> to showcase legislation on hot-button issues that Democrats feel could hurt Republicans at the ballot box in November, including reproductive rights and immigration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2440994\/supreme-court-will-adopt-an-ethics-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"adopted its own code of ethics\">adopted its own code of ethics<\/a> last year in the face of increased pressure over undisclosed travel and gifts. But Democrats say it fails to go far enough because it allows justices to essentially govern themselves at their own discretion, stating they \u201cmay accept reasonable compensation and reimbursement of expenses for permitted activities\u201d if the gift is not intended to influence a justice\u2019s duties \u201cor otherwise appear improper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justice Samuel Alito has rebuffed calls from Durbin and other Democrats to recuse himself from two Jan. 6 cases after it was revealed flags tied to Capitol rioters and efforts to overturn the 2020 election were flown at two of his properties in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senate Democrats&#8217; bid to introduce new ethics rules for the Supreme Court was thwarted by Sen.
