Republican Michael Rulli won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/susan-wright-heading-to-runoff-election-for-texas-congressional-seat-previously-held-by-late-husband\/\" title=\"Susan Wright heading to runoff election for Texas congressional seat previously held by late husband\">seat previously held<\/a> \u2062by Rep. Bill Johnson, who resigned, defeating Democrat Michael Kripchak \u2064by less than a 10% margin. This represented a significant narrowing from\u2064 the usual GOP victory margins\u2064 in the district. Despite Rulli&#8217;s \u2062substantial fundraising lead, the election was unexpectedly close. \u200dHowever, the National Republican Congressional Committee remains confident, attributing \u200bthe tight race to the unique circumstances of a low-turnout, off-calendar special election and anticipating stronger Republican performance in future elections with \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vermonts-republican-governor-signs-legislation-expanding-mail-in-voting\/\" title=\"Vermont\u2019s Republican Governor Signs Legislation Expanding Mail-In Voting\">higher voter turnout<\/a>. \u2063A full\u2063 term election for the district is scheduled for November.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Democrats are feeling good about an overperformance in a special election for a Republican-dominated <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Ohio\">Ohio<\/a> congressional district, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republicans<\/a> are not seeing the result as a reason to panic.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Michael Rulli <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3038437\/michael-rulli-wins-ohio-special-election-bill-johnson-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"defeated\">defeated<\/a> Democrat Michael Kripchak for former Republican Rep. Bill Johnson\u2019s seat after the ex-congressman resigned in January to become the president of Youngstown State University. <\/p>\n<p>The GOP candidate won the election by less than 10% in a district former President Donald Trump won by 28 points in 2020. Ohio\u2019s 6th Congressional District has a partisan voting index of Republican +16, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/ratings\/house-race-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"according to\">according to<\/a> the <em>Cook Political Report<\/em>, and Johnson won reelection to the seat in 2022 by roughly 35%, meaning Rulli fell significantly short of typical margins for the district.<\/p>\n<p>The race was closer than expected in Ohio\u2019s 6th Congressional District, despite Rulli having a massive fundraising advantage in the district. The latest Federal Election Commission filings from the end of May show that Rulli reported having $76,146.50 cash on hand, compared to Kripchak, who only reported $14,681.25 cash on hand.<\/p>\n<p>National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Jack Pandol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/playbook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> <em>Politico<\/em> the GOP is \u201cnot sweating it\u201d and pointed out how it was a special election not aligned with any other major contests in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a special election.\u00a0It\u2019s off-calendar. Turnout is really low,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think that it\u2019s useful or instructive to try to read into this too much. \u2026 We will eviscerate the Democrat with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/over-sleazy\/\" title=\"Excessively Sleazy\">presidential-level turnout<\/a>, as Republicans have in the past several cycles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The primary for the House seats in Ohio was held in March, while the general election for all House seats nationwide will be held on Nov. 5, alongside the presidential election. The election for a full term in Ohio\u2019s 6th Congressional District will be held in November.<\/p>\n<p>While the special election on Tuesday saw a wider discrepancy between previous results than other special contests to fill seats for the 118th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Congress<\/a>, many have not lined up with the prior election in terms of margins.<\/p>\n<p>The special election for New York\u2019s 26th Congressional District earlier this year saw Democrat Tim Kennedy win the contest over Republican Gary Dickson by more than 36%, which was a larger margin than the nearly 28% victory by Democrat Brian Higgins in the regular election in 2022. Another special election contest in Utah\u2019s 2nd Congressional District in October 2023 saw Republican Celeste Maloy win by more than 23%, while in the regular 2022 election, Republican Chris Stewart won by more than 25%.<\/p>\n<p>While special elections are typically not clear indicators of future elections, Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg told<em> Politico<\/em> that he thinks the Ohio result is a pattern of Democrats overperforming the polls.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a fairly consistent pattern where Democrats have overperformed expectations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republican-scores-key-special-election-victory-boosting-gops-house-majority\/\" title=\"Republican Wins Crucial Special Election, Strengthens GOP House Majority\">overperformed public polling<\/a>,\u201d he said. \u201cThe single most powerful force in our politics is fear and opposition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/MAGA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>MAGA<\/a>. When the choice of MAGA and other alternatives are presented to voters, MAGA underperforms public polling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden has trailed in most recent polls behind Trump nationally and in key swing states. In Ohio, Biden is far behind Trump in most recent polls \u2014 with a Marist <a href=\"https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/polls\/the-2024-elections-in-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"poll\">poll<\/a> released earlier this month showing Trump leading by 7%.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats are optimistic after unexpectedly strong performance in a GOP-leaning Ohio district special election.
