Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 12, 2024 at 6:21am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson is probably breathing just a little easier this morning, as Republican Michael Rulli\u2019s victory in Ohio\u2019s 6th Congressional District Tuesday night gave him just a tad more breathing room in his narrow Republican House majority.<\/p>\n<p>Rulli was widely expected to win, as former President Donald Trump won the 6th District by more than 30 points in the last two elections.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, his 9-point margin on Tuesday was so much less than Trump\u2019s that it was giving some Democrats cause for hope in November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2024\/06\/12\/dems-get-a-pleasant-election-night-surprise-00162890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico<\/a> reported Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Left-leaning political analyst Simon Rosenberg, a frequent contributor to MSNBC\u2019s presidential campaign coverage, told Politico that watching voting was much more important than watching the polling that has shown President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-drops-time-low-approval-rating-prominent-pollster-suggests-dropout-threshold-may-hit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a> with a tough row to hoe in the general election later this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a fairly consistent pattern where Democrats have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-steers-clear-of-virginia-before-bellwether-election\/\" title=\"Biden avoids Virginia ahead of crucial election.\">overperformed expectations<\/a>, overperformed public polling,\u201d Rosenberg told Politico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe single most powerful force in our politics is fear and opposition to MAGA,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen the choice of MAGA and other alternatives are presented to voters, MAGA underperforms public polling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jack Pandol, communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said it would be \u201cfoolish\u201d to draw any conclusions from one special election, however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a special election. It\u2019s off-calendar,\u201d he told Politico. \u201cTurnout is really low. I don\u2019t think that it\u2019s useful or instructive to try to read into this too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will eviscerate the Democrat with presidential-level turnout, as Republicans have in the past several cycles,\u201d he predicted.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will Republicans expand their House majority in November?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rulli will now serve out the remainder of former Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gop-rep-retire-congress-take-new-job-left-losing-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Johnson<\/a>\u2019s term, who accepted the presidency of Youngstown State University last November and resigned his seat in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew the polls were gong to be close, and the guy I ran against really worked,\u201d Rulli told <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ohio-congress-house-special-election-48362c9a1d784723d5c0faf96fc356b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s a really hard worker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this is a blue-collar district, this is Bruce Springstein, the forgotten man, \u2018Joe Bag of Donuts,&#8217;\u201d he added. \u201cThey don\u2019t trust the Democrats and Republicans, and they look at the individual. And I\u2019m really good at retail politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As well he should be, as Rulli\u2019s family established the Rulli Bros. grocery store in 1917 and continues to operate two locations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ohio-removes-numerous-non-citizens-voter-rolls-calls-biden-administration-take-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio<\/a> today, 107 years later.<\/p>\n<p>Rulli will again face Democrat Michael Kripchak, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/air-force-releases-photos-futuristic-stealth-bomber-50-years-making\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air Force<\/a> veteran and former actor, in November, as the two compete for a full term in the next Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight\u2019s results have not diminished our spirit,\u201d Kripchak said in a written statement cited by the AP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough historically a red district, our campaign outperformed expectations, proving the doubters wrong,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio\u2019s 6th District leans Republican by nearly 3-to-2, according to data cited by the AP.<\/p>\n<p>Rulli told <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2024\/06\/11\/ohio-voters-tap-rulli-for-house-vacancy-boosting-gops-majority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roll Call<\/a> that he planned to \u201ctake up his predecessor Johnson\u2019s legacy as a champion of oil and natural gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely don\u2019t want to drop the ball on that,\u201d Rulli told Roll Call.<\/p>\n<p>Once he is sworn in, Rulli, a former two-term Ohio senator, will bring the Republicans\u2019 advantage in House up to six, 219-213.
