His \u2064service included significant contributions\u200b to conservation and public enjoyment of America\u2019s national parks, making his loss deeply\u200d felt by the community and colleagues\u2063 alike.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 12, 2024 at 6:58am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A life filled with service to some of the country\u2019s most treasured public spaces has come to a close.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Lorig, a park ranger who began his years of service to national parks in 1968, died on June 7 after an accident that took place in Utah\u2019s Bryce Canyon National Park.<\/p>\n<p>Lorig, 78, had been on duty for Bryce Canyon\u2019s annual Astronomy Festival, when he tripped and fell at about 11:30 p.m., striking his head on a large rock, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/brca\/learn\/news\/bryce-canyon-ranger-dies-from-on-duty-accident-at-annual-astronomy-festival.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Park Service<\/a> news release. At the time, he had been directing a visitor to a shuttle bus.<\/p>\n<p>The visitor alerted a nearby law enforcement ranger after Lorig was unresponsive. Although park rangers, bystanders and first responders tried to revive Lorig, he died.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Ranger Tom Lorig, who has been working and volunteering for the National Parks Service since 1968, tripped and fell onto a rock during the Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival on Friday, sustaining a fatal injury. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/N7WP3XTiE8\">https:\/\/t.co\/N7WP3XTiE8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 KUTV2news (@KUTV2News) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KUTV2News\/status\/1799599506880602227?\">June 9, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTom Lorig served Bryce Canyon, the National Park Service, and the public as an interpretive park ranger, forging connections between the world and these special places that he loved,\u201d Bryce Canyon Park Superintendent Jim Ireland said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our community processes and grieves this terrible loss, we extend our deepest condolences to all of Ranger Lorig\u2019s family and friends,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lorig was a registered nurse for 40 years in the Seattle, Washington, region.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you enjoy visiting national parks?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He also worked in a variety of roles as a ranger and volunteer, beginning with Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico in June of 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Lorig would serve at 14 national park sites including Badlands in South Dakota, Bryce Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico, Florissant Fossil Beds in Colorado, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Washington state, Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state;<\/p>\n<p>New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in West Virginia, Olympic National Park in Washington state, Saguaro National Park in Arizona, Yosemite National Park in California, Zion National Park in Utah and Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTom was a dedicated public servant, and his loss will be felt by the many who knew him across the National Park Service,\u201d the Park Service posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BryceCanyonnps\/posts\/855842519921504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Lorig made the drive from Seattle to New Mexico to ensure that a piece of Carlsbad\u2019s history would be preserved, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/cave\/learn\/news\/mirror-lake-sign-returned.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Park Service<\/a> release.<\/p>\n<p>Lorig had been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/deadliest-national-park-revealed-foia-based-investigation-highest-deaths-missing-persons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">park guide<\/a> from 1968 through 1973. When lighted signs reached the park in 1973, employees were allowed to take home the signs being replaced.<\/p>\n<p>But 40 years later, he brought back his treasure so it could be on display at the park.<\/p>\n<p>Lorig returned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-trump-champions-national-parks-signs-3-billion-year-conservation-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">painted wood sign<\/a> that marked Mirror Lake in the Big Room of Carlsbad Cavern<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mirror Lake sign was the most coveted one, because of the mirror-image text that read right-side up when reflected on the surface of the pool,\u201d he said in the release, explaining why he chose it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad the sign is back at Carlsbad Caverns.
