In this \u2063heated climate, both sides\u200d are poised to use the legal troubles of the opposing camp as\u2063 a\u200b focal point in the \u200cbroader narrative of law and politics leading up to the 2021 elections.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Democrats are using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hunter-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Hunter Biden\">Hunter Biden<\/a>\u2018s Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3036924\/hunter-biden-guilty-of-three-gun-felonies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"found guilty\">conviction<\/a> on felony <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/firearms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"found guilty\">gun<\/a> charges to counter Republican claims that former President Donald Trump is the victim of a two-tiered system of justice.<\/p>\n<p>But whether that argument resonates with voters in November is not yet clear as perceptions of the two candidates remain largely unchanged despite a series of legal twists and turns in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"presidential election\">presidential<\/a> rematch.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats were quick to claim that Hunter Biden would not have been prosecuted had there been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-trump-cliff-can-anyone-pull-the-gop-back-from-the-ledge\/\" title=\"Can anyone save the GOP from the Trump cliff?\">legal double standard<\/a> as Republicans call Trump the victim of a coordinated effort to keep him out of the White House. Last month, he was found guilty of falsifying business records in Manhattan court and faces federal prosecutions over Jan. 6 and his handling of classified documents.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict also provided an opportunity for President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">Joe Biden<\/a> to contrast himself with the former president. He said he would respect a Delaware jury\u2019s decision to find his son guilty of illegally possessing a gun and lying on a federal form to obtain it.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict is the latest development Democrats have used to challenge Trump\u2019s \u201clawfare\u201d claims. Despite Trump complaining he could not get a fair trial in New York City, his opponents pointed out that he was found guilty in the hush money case by a jury of his peers.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, the two verdicts are ammunition Joe Biden can use to counter the narrative that his Justice Department is persecuting him. But Republicans doubt that translates into a meaningful shift in a race with two well-known candidates running on track records from their first terms.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, the party is betting that voter sentiment on the trials is already baked into the electoral cake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democrats hope that this gives the Justice Department more credibility to make the Trump persecutions more credible,\u201d Republican strategist John Feehery told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThat\u2019s why they are cheering this verdict. I doubt it will work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before the Hunter Biden verdict was announced on Tuesday, Republicans were dismissing the notion that the first son being prosecuted undermines Trump\u2019s claims of political persecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s remember, Hunter Biden would be enjoying his sweetheart deal right now, that the Justice Department negotiated with him, had the judge in the case not posed questions in open court,\u201d Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-backs-republican-covid-19-package-after-mcconnell-rejects-bipartisan-proposal\/\" title=\"Trump backs Republican COVID-19 package after McConnell rejects bipartisan proposal\">told reporters<\/a> last week, referring to a plea deal Hunter Biden\u2019s lawyers negotiated that subsequently fell apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, they\u2019ve been backed into this corner now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, for their part, feel that any attempt Trump makes to bring up Hunter Biden will leave him open to counterattacks based on his own legal troubles. Left-leaning voices also like to point out that the younger Biden is not the president, even though some efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3037032\/ex-intel-officials-hunter-biden-laptop-gop-resolution\/\">distance Hunter Biden from his father have failed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe easy answer is: \u2018I\u2019m sorry, you want to talk about my son being on trial when you were just found guilty in the state of New York?\u2019\u201d Democratic strategist Stefan Hankin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3031291\/hunter-biden-laptop-debate-issue-trump-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>previously told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cAnd then you pivot into all of President Trump\u2019s challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans will have to deal with a second Hunter Biden trial set to begin in September, this one on tax evasion charges in California court. So close to the November election, it will give Democrats another chance to message that Joe Biden\u2019s son is not above the law.<\/p>\n<p>The first round of polls following Trump\u2019s conviction showed him losing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trump-guilty-verdict-first-polls-rcna155226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>only a few<\/a> voters, while a few even had him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\/3027551\/trump-up-two-post-conviction-polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>gaining ground<\/a>.
