The\u2064 political maneuvering signals persistent \u200dtensions and\u200d differing strategies between the two\u200d parties as they \u200ctackle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-signs-memorandum-backpedaling-on-president-trumps-abortion-policies\/\" title=\"Joe Biden signs memorandum backpedaling on President Trump\u2019s abortion policies\">reproductive rights<\/a> and \u200dother contentious issues leading up to\u2063 the elections.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senate Republicans are weighing how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3033508\/the-ivf-battle-how-senate-republicans-are-navigating-the-political-minefield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"take the wind out of Democrats\u2019s sails\">take the wind out of Democrats\u2019 sails<\/a> later this week when Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) puts to a vote a package of bills to protect access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ivf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"in vitro fertilization\">in vitro fertilization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, which would enshrine a right to IVF into federal law, is expected to receive a vote on Thursday but faces a similar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3029511\/contraception-bill-shot-down-senate-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>defeat<\/a> as last week\u2019s contraception bill, with Republicans lining up behind their own measures following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark ruling returned the question of abortion restrictions to the states, but Democrats have since argued the ruling has implications for reproductive rights more broadly and believe the issue can be used to pressure Republicans in an election year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting IVF should be one of the easiest votes the Senate has taken all year,\u201d Schumer said in a Tuesday afternoon floor speech. \u201cThe vast majority of senators should agree that strengthening treatments that help people start a family is a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just as they did with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3026406\/ernst-unveil-contraception-bill-senate-vote-schumer-backed-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"fight over contraception\">fight over contraception<\/a>, Senate Republicans will counterprogram the vote by putting forward their own legislation on IVF.<\/p>\n<p>One such bill, led by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Katie Britt (R-AL), will be brought up for what is known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mccarthy-to-introduce-bill-replenishing-israels-iron-dome-while-democrats-deal-with-omars-anti-semitic-outburst\/\" title=\"McCarthy To Introduce Bill Replenishing Israel\u2019s Iron Dome While Democrats Deal With Omar\u2019s Anti-Semitic Outburst\">unanimous consent request<\/a>, according to a source familiar with the matter. The move will force Democrats to shoot it down.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP strategy comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3014363\/senate-democrats-pivot-2024-agenda-schumer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Schumer ramps up an election-year agenda\">Schumer ramps up<\/a> what Republicans have dismissed as \u201cshow votes\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/10-ways-to-save-the-modern-awards-show\/\" title=\"10 Ways To Save The Modern Awards Show\">hot-button issues<\/a> such as immigration and reproductive health.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), a leadership adviser who\u2019s running to be Sen. Mitch McConnell\u2019s (R-KY) successor as Senate GOP leader, condemned \u201canother partisan show vote\u201d from Democrats on \u201canother made-up controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Sen. Scott Applewhite)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere are countless bipartisan bills that deserve a vote by the Senate, but [Schumer] is simply disinterested,\u201d Cornyn said. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who\u2019s also seeking to replace McConnell, has stepped up his IVF advocacy since entering the race. He has a nonbinding pro-IVF resolution that he could try to pass on the floor as well. Last week, he launched a seven-figure ad campaign vowing to protect access.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Democrats\u2019 IVF bill, the Right to IVF Act, is led by Sens. Patty Murray (D-WA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and Cory Booker (D-NJ). It includes four separate measures and comes amid the second anniversary of the overturning of <em>Roe<\/em>, as well as in the wake of the Alabama Supreme Court earlier this year ruling frozen embryos should be considered children. The decision forced state lawmakers to pass temporary legal protections for IVF providers.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to protecting IVF, the Democratic bill would shield providers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/walsh-aoc-dismissed-the-suffering-of-riot-victims-but-now-wants-us-to-have-sympathy-for-her\/\" title=\"WALSH: AOC Dismissed The Suffering Of Riot Victims But Now Wants Us To Have Sympathy For Her\">legal liability<\/a>, safeguard access for service members and veterans, and require more health insurance providers to help pick up the tab for the procedure, which can cost up to tens of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation from Britt and Cruz, the IVF Protection Act, is far more narrowly tailored over religious liberty concerns.
