Who\u00a0 needs them?<\/p>\n<p>So say many feminists and other enemies of the traditional family.<\/p>\n<p>After all, Dad is portrayed in media as a buffoon who is ignorant compared to his longsuffering wife and is continually shown up by his kids.<\/p>\n<p>Even his humor gets put down as a collection of \u201cdad jokes,\u201d a description of their corniness.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll admit to that last failing, but contrary to popular culture, there are many people who need their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mike-rowe-fatherlessness-sick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fathers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ask the children of divorce limited by courts in their times with their dads. Ask people who don\u2019t know who their fathers are. Ask those who lost their fathers to death.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Cowell is deeply affected by the 1999 death of his father, and he became emotional when speaking on \u201cThe Diary of a CEO,\u201d Steven Bartlett\u2019s podcast aimed at exploring the vulnerabilities of business people.<\/p>\n<p>Despite celebrity as a judge on \u201cX Factor,\u201d \u201cBritain\u2019s Got Talent,\u201d \u201cPop Idol,\u201d \u201cAmerican Idol,\u201d and other TV shows, plus being a big player in the music industry as a producer and talent scout, Cowell said his father\u2019s death was devastating.<\/p>\n<p>But he said his life changed when he became a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-best-moment-nfl-draft-reminds-world-young-men-need-fathers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">father<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is there a more significant honor in this world than being a father?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBittersweet,\u201d is how Cowell described the time when the band he promoted, Westlife, had a top hit. He called home to tell about it and learned his father had died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI genuinely believed at that point in my life \u2014 I just believed, my parents were going to live forever,\u201d Cowell said. \u201c\u2026\u2019Cause the hardest thing when you lose your parents is \u2014 you can\u2019t even think of them afterwards because it\u2019s too difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then after awhile, when I have a question in my mind, I do talk to them in my mind \u2014 \u2018What would you do?\u2019 And I know what they would say. So I really do still believe they\u2019re with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that was a very bittersweet moment. And, you know, I would have swapped everything I had succeeded to have kept him around,\u201d Cowell said of his father. \u201cAnd all the things that he taught me over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longest trip home\u201d is how Cowell described his return from a music event in Germany where he learned of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-nba-superstar-reveals-really-matters-asked-fatherhood-helped-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">father\u2019s death<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said losing his parents was the hardest thing that ever happened to him: \u201cThey were my best friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then came the birth of his own son, Eric.<\/p>\n<p>Love for and from his parents and for and from Eric, Cowell described as \u201cpure love,\u201d adding in that kind of loving family \u201ceverything comes full circle, thank God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the 2015 loss of his mother, Cowell said he was on a \u201cdownward spiral,\u201d was \u201cdesperately unhappy\u201d and was unfulfilled in his career. He would lose himself in his work, laboring until 7 or 8 in the morning and becoming \u201ca ridiculous workaholic,\u201d essentially addicted to his lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>But then, Cowell learned he was going to be a father, and that was something that would \u201cchange everything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BvsbCdCG8gE?si=ihX-beSzMDTOCQPN\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made me happy again. To me, it was perfect,\u201d he said, and he told of watching a movie with his son and seeing the same joy Cowell had experienced when he was a boy.<\/p>\n<p>Queried Bartlett: \u201cHe saved you, in many respects, didn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout question,\u201d Cowell replied. \u201cI really, really had reached the point where nothing mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven to the point that I almost can\u2019t remember anything from that period. It hit me so hard,\u201d he continued, noting how difficult it was to be on television in his emotional state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole time was dark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Insightful people note that men need a purpose bigger than themselves \u2014 worlds to conquer; businesses to build; accolades to receive in awards, commissions, and bonuses; and accomplishments to be made through insights of science, theology, wisdom, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Cowell did a lot of it, although best would be the mission of discipleship in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>But there are profound changes that come upon a man when he becomes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pat-nolan-hooray-coach-dungys-work-connect-fathers-young-sons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a father<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The worlds, businesses, commissions and such are still there.\u00a0But suddenly, that tiny, previously unknown baby becomes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-great-joy-fatherhood-not-faint-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prominent<\/a> in the constellation of a man\u2019s concerns.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve long described the arrival of little boy or girl as opening a new chamber in a man\u2019s heart; it becomes a Daddy Heart. And it grows into other dimensions like protector, teacher, and guide.<\/p>\n<p>It changes a man. Profoundly, as Cowell and many of us will attest.<\/p>\n<p>Profoundly.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and there\u2019s a Grandpa Heart, too, and it also is profound, but that\u2019s for another day.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the family, the nation, and the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nyt-slams-popular-kids-show-dad-positive-role-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">need men<\/a> engaged in the mission of being fathers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important, Dad.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>An Important Message from Our Staff:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>In just a few months, the world is going to change forever.
