Staggs pointed\u2064 out\u2064 that on March\u2062 4, 2020,\u200c the same day Abbott Laboratories received a federal\u2063 grant, Curtis bought stock in the \u200bcompany. He criticized \u2063this\u2064 action\u2064 as\u2063 prioritizing personal\u200c gain over constituent\u200d interests. Curtis, who\u200d leads in recent polls, was\u200c debating against Staggs, former Utah House\u200b Speaker Brad Wilson, \u2063and Jason Walton, all aiming to succeed Sen. Mitt Romney.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The end of an hourlong debate between four Republican candidates running for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/utah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Utah\">Utah<\/a>\u2019s open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Utah\">Senate<\/a> seat got heated when one candidate insinuated that another was guilty of insider trading.<\/p>\n<p>Riverton, Utah, Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/trentstaggs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Trent Staggs\">Trent Staggs<\/a> levied an accusation of insider trading against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/energy-and-environment\/2794344\/utah-republican-john-curtis-not-climate-guy-senate-romney-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Rep. John Curtis (R-UT)\">Rep. John Curtis (R-UT)<\/a>, who represents the state\u2019s 3rd Congressional District. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn March 4 of 2020, Abbott Laboratories was awarded a federal grant. On that same day, John Curtis purchased stock in that company. This is the problem in Congress. At a time when somebody should be looking out for their constituents, they end up looking out for their own profit,\u201d Staggs said during his closing remarks on Monday night. <\/p>\n<p>Curtis, who is in the lead in an <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/senate\/2024\/utah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>average<\/a> of recent polling, faced Staggs along with former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson and Jason Walton in a debate on Monday. The four candidates are competing to replace Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2443569\/sen-mitt-romney-to-retire-from-senate-instead-of-seeking-second-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>announced his retirement<\/a> last year. The congressman was able to respond to the attack in the final moments of the debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve accused me of a felony here tonight. You better have very good evidence. And I\u2019d like to challenge you to produce that evidence,\u201d Curtis said, speaking to Staggs. \u201cIf that\u2019s how you\u2019re going to work in the Senate, the people of Utah will be very disappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis pushed back against Staggs\u2019s comments during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utah-gop-candidate-accuses-congressman-john-curtis-of-insider-trading-on-air\/\" title=\"Utah GOP candidate alleges Congressman John Curtis engaged in insider trading during a broadcast\">post-debate press conference<\/a> with reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a cheap shot. I think the thing that\u2019s unfortunate about it is Mr. Staggs, his whole campaign is about the dirtiness of Washington and how he\u2019s going to fix that. I think he really showed his hand,\u201d the congressman said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/politics\/2024\/06\/10\/accusations-insider-trading-spark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the <em>Salt Lake Tribune<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Staggs repeated his accusations when he spoke to reporters following the debate. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t accusing him of a felony. I think that\u2019s a problem.
