A media forensics and artificial intelligence (AI) expert denied the claim\u2019s authenticity to Check Your Fact in an email.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a recent filing, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) argued against releasing the audio of Biden\u2019s interview with Hur, citing concerns about \u201cdeepfakes,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4698375-justice-department-joe-biden-robert-hur-audio-release-blocked-house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hill<\/a>. The DOJ said if the audio was released it would be \u201ceasier for malicious actors to pass off an altered file as the true recording,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-knows-he-messed-up-on-fracking-at-debate-and-is-now-doing-damage-control-the-daily-wire\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Knows He Messed Up On Fracking At Debate And Is Now Doing Damage Control | The Daily Wire\">outlet reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The TikTok video claims to share leaked audio of Biden\u2019s interview with Hur. \u201cIs this leaked audio of Special Counsel Hur questioning Joe Biden. Is it real? If it\u2019s fake, Joe Biden must release the real one. Otherwise, how can it be disputed?\u201d the video\u2019s caption reads.<\/p>\n<p>According to the audio, Hur appears to question Biden on duties performed by \u201cfront-office staff\u201d and how Biden referred to these individuals. Biden appears to respond that he referred to these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/missouris-republican-governor-says-gop-lawmakers-tried-to-embarrass-him-in-disgusting-scheme\/\" title=\"Missouri\u2019s Republican Governor Says GOP Lawmakers Tried To \u2018Embarrass\u2019 Him In \u2018Disgusting Scheme\u2019\">staff members<\/a> by their first names \u201cif [he] knew them.\u201d Biden later appears to say he\u2019s trying to \u201cthink back ten years now\u201d or \u201cabout ten years\u201d following the question from Hur.<\/p>\n<p>The claim is false. Check Your Fact did not find the purported conversation shared via the TikTok video referenced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=d74f51b76966d127&#038;sca_upv=1&#038;q=joe+biden+interview+with+special+counsel+robert+hur&#038;tbm=nws&#038;source=lnms&#038;prmd=vnisbmtz&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwj7tq35ndGGAxXxmokEHQXoBoQQ0pQJegQIChAB&#038;biw=1680&#038;bih=871&#038;dpr=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">any credible news reports<\/a> about Biden\u2019s interview with Hur. In fact, the opposite is true. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2024\/jun\/07\/tiktok-posts\/joe-biden-robert-hur-interview-audio-wasnt-leaked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politifact<\/a> debunked the claim on June 7, labeling the audio as a \u201cdeepfake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, while a <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-judiciary.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/doj-hjc-hur-0000033-0000191.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transcript<\/a> of Biden\u2019s October 8 interview with Hur does mention \u201cfront-office staff,\u201d it does not match the audio included in the TikTok video exactly. The DOJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/news\/press-releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has not issued<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?lang=en&#038;q=%22Is%20this%20a%20leaked%20audio%20of%20special%20counsel%20%2C%20Hur%20questioning%20Joe%20Biden.Is%20it%20real%3F%20If%20it%27s%20fake%2C%20Joe%20Biden%20must%20release%20the%20real%20one.%20Otherwise%2C%20how%20can%20it%20be%20disputed%3F%22%20(from%3ATheJusticeDept)%20lang%3Aen&#038;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a statement<\/a> about the clip, either. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2024\/06\/10\/fact-check-biden-attempt-sit-chair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: No, Joe Biden Did Not Attempt To Sit Down On \u2018A Chair That Does Not Exist\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Dr. Walter Scheirer, a media forensics and AI expert at the University of Notre Dame, denied the claim\u2019s authenticity to Check Your Fact in an email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis clip is highly suspect, and is possibly the product of a voice synthesis algorithm. The most obvious problem with it is that it is circulating on social media with no authoritative attribution. No trustworthy news outlet is reporting on it. Further, the nonsense response given at the end of the clip would be odd even for someone in cognitive decline.
