The verdict comes after the first son\u2019s plea deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2573415\/hunter-biden-plea-collapsed-deal-leaves-first-sons-lawyers-furious\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>fell through last year<\/a> that would have allowed him to plead guilty to tax misdemeanor charges\u00a0and avoid felony gun charges.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats pointed to the conviction on Tuesday as evidence that the Justice Department has not been \u201cweaponized\u201d against former President Donald Trump, who faces federal prosecution over his handling of classified documents and role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>However, Republicans pointed to what they called the \u201csweetheart\u201d plea deal Hunter Biden was nearly granted, plus corruption allegations at the center of the House GOP\u2019s impeachment inquiry into the president, to counter the messaging.<\/p>\n<p>House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said the plea deal was \u201csmoked out\u201d by a federal judge before relitigating the claims of the impeachment inquiry, which has stalled out in recent weeks. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who faces a competitive primary on Tuesday, said \u201ctiming is everything\u201d and blasted the verdict as a \u201cveil of fairness in the Justice System\u201d under Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans had been bracing for the possibility of a guilty verdict even before it was announced. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) argued the Justice Department followed through with its prosecution of Hunter Biden because it was \u201cbacked into\u201d a corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s remember, Hunter Biden would be enjoying his sweetheart deal right now, that the Justice Department negotiated with him, had the judge in the case not posed questions in open court,\u201d Hawley said last week.<\/p>\n<p>However, one Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), seemed to disagree with the verdict in a statement to X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunter might deserve to be in jail for something, but purchasing a gun is not it,\u201d Massie said. \u201cThere are millions of marijuana users who own guns in this country, and none of them should be in jail for purchasing or possessing a firearm against current laws.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/1800562245744959780\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the other side, Democrats believe Hunter Biden\u2019s guilty verdict rebuts GOP accusations that the Justice Department is politically biased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MAGA GOP tried to tell us the Justice Department had been \u2018weaponized\u2019 against them,\u201d Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) said. \u201cThe evidence says otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep.
