The campaign will mark another race in which the ideological balance of the court could shift. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am running for Supreme Court justice to protect the basic rights and freedoms of Wisconsinites under our constitution. She also represented Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin in a case that looked to expand abortion access in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Crawford will face conservative Waukesha County Circuit Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wisconsin-supreme-court-brad-schimel-15cc48084e9c0177816c1557f2476d57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Brad Schimel<\/a>, a former Republican state attorney general who opposes abortion, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wisconsin-supreme-court-susan-crawford-15c610b8eaf3ecebdcc0ed2754279cd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Associated Press<\/em><\/a>. The pair are the only two in the running so far, but candidates have until Jan. 1, 2025, to enter the race.<\/p>\n<p>If more than two candidates enter the race, a Feb. 18 primary will be held. The election will be held on April 1, 2025, and the winner will serve a 10-year term.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Walsh announced her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/2962794\/longest-serving-liberal-judge-announces-retirement-wisconsin-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>retirement<\/a>, leaving a seat vacant in the newly liberal-leaning court. In 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/04\/04\/wisconsin-supreme-court-election-results-2023-janet-protasiewicz-daniel-kelly\/70052928007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Justice Janet Protasiewicz <\/a>won against former state Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly, effectively giving liberals control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court for the first time in 15 years. <\/p>\n<p>The 2023 state Supreme Court race was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdc.org\/news\/press-releases\/139-press-release-2023\/7390-wisconsin-supreme-court-race-cost-record-51m#:~:text=Protasiewicz%20and%20outside%20groups%20that,%2411.67%20million%20by%20supporting%20groups.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>most expensive<\/a> for the position in state history, with all parties involved spending $51.06 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Democrats are <a href=\"https:\/\/madison.com\/news\/state-regional\/government-politics\/wisconsin-supreme-court-dane-county-susan-crawford-judge-brad-schimel-election-2025\/article_55d930bc-272b-11ef-8bc9-171426a44ef4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>expected<\/a> to focus Crawford\u2019s campaign on abortion access as they did with Protasiewicz in 2023. In September, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/health\/abortion-restrictions-still-exist-wisconsin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>resumed abortion services<\/a> in the Madison area after a Dane County judge ruled the 1849 abortion ban governed feticide, not consensual abortion.
