Political strategists suggest that merely choosing a female running mate \u200bmay not \u200csufficiently address Trump&#8217;s\u200c image issues among women, \u2063indicating a complex dynamic in wooing female voters while \u200ctrying to reshape perceptual biases.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kristi-noem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kristi Noem<\/a> (R-SD) implored former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> to consider the appeal of a woman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/vice-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>vice president<\/a>, a crafty attempt at boosting her profile after multiple scandals hurt her stock as a running mate.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cAll the polls tell him in swing states that a woman on the ticket helps him win; the polls just say that,\u201d Noem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3033735\/noem-thinks-trump-choosing-a-woman-as-his-running-mate-would-be-beneficial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> CNN\u2019s <em>State of the Union<\/em> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne in four Republican women haven\u2019t made up their minds because they want to have a woman talking to them about the issues they care about, and women aren\u2019t monolithic,\u201d Noem continued. \u201cThey don\u2019t care about just one issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/election-2024\/?utm_source=homepage&#038;utm_medium=banner&#038;utm_campaign=iowa_caucus&#038;utm_id=election2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ELECTION 2024: FOLLOW LATEST COVERAGE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent reports suggest Noem has not made Trump\u2019s narrowed-down list of possible running mates, which includes Sens. Tim Scott (R-SC), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and J.D. Vance (R-OH); Reps. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY); Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND); and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson.<\/p>\n<p>Political strategists had long claimed that Noem\u2019s gaffes this year would likely nix her from Trump\u2019s list of running mates due to unpleasant media attention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Women will determine the outcome of this election. We need to make sure they are supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@realdonaldtrump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I spent the majority of my time in Wisconsin talking with women \u2014 talking with independents \u2014 talking with the people we need win over. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/r359dNZlw9\">pic.twitter.com\/r359dNZlw9<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Kristi Noem (@KristiNoem) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KristiNoem\/status\/1799834680042373504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 9, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Noem faced national outcry in April after her most recent book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2982411\/kristi-noem-defends-story-of-killing-her-dog-in-wake-of-book-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>revealed<\/a> she killed her family\u2019s 14-month-old puppy Cricket, whom she \u201chated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her book, <em>No Going Back: The Truth on What\u2019s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward<\/em>, Noem explained that after Cricket attacked a local family\u2019s chickens during a pheasant hunting trip, Noem led the dog to a gravel pit and shot it.<\/p>\n<p>The backlash against Noem was swift, bipartisan, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2982990\/kristi-noem-underestimates-shock-over-dog-killing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reminiscent<\/a> of past presidential cruelty toward animals.<\/p>\n<p>Before the puppy-killing incident, Noem faced significant criticism for peddling business products on social media. She declined to answer questions about\u00a0an\u00a0unusual infomercial-style <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2918750\/gov-kristi-noem-silent-spent-cosmetic-dentistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>video<\/a> she posted on X in March after receiving cosmetic dentistry work from a Texas business.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether Noem received financial compensation for the posting. <\/p>\n<p>Days after the dentist incident, Noem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2922394\/kristi-noem-shoe-product-lawsuit-cosmetic-dentistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>promoted Fit My Feet<\/a>, which has several locations in South Dakota, for building insoles for her running and cowboy shoes. The governor was again criticized for the promotion.<\/p>\n<p>But with Trump\u2019s recent legal problems involving women, there is some argument that a female joining his ticket would help win back suburban women who have drifted away from the GOP.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump, left, embraces Gov. Jean Carroll in a civil trial and ordered to pay Carroll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2821525\/trump-must-pay-83-million-to-carroll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>$83.3 million<\/a>. In late May, Trump was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3018093\/trump-guilty-in-manhattan-hush-money-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>found guilty<\/a> of 34 charges of falsifying business records to cover up an affair with porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has long bragged about his appointment of three Supreme Court judges who helped overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, leaving abortion access directly in the hands of state governments. <\/p>\n<p>However, some GOP strategists are not convinced that simply adding a woman to the ticket solves Trump\u2019s problems with women voters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that necessarily choosing a woman is going to necessarily be helpful in making him appear different than what he is,\u201d said Jason Roe, a Republican strategist who has worked on multiple presidential campaigns. \u201cI do think maybe in terms of campaigning and having a surrogate that can barnstorm the country on his behalf, you know, there could be some appeal there and maybe some female voters that would, you know, be open to hearing a message from a surrogate like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s also what are the optics,\u201d Roe added. \u201cWhat does a woman serving as his No. 2 look like to other women? It may look a little too subservient. That might look a little too enabling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a similar vein, Matt Dole, a Republican political consultant based in Ohio, echoed concerns that adding a woman as Trump\u2019s second-in-command wouldn\u2019t remedy the problem. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump has incredible work to do with female voters. He has an uphill battle to fight with female voters,\u201d Dole said. \u201cBut I think that the only path forward is for Trump to go carry that message to them directly.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In a January poll from <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Quinnipiac University<\/a>, 58% of women supported President Joe Biden in a hypothetical matchup compared to 36% of women who backed Trump. An April poll from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/elections\/abortion-poll-trump-swing-state-voters-2024-election-3e12f57c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>  of seven battleground states showed 39% of suburban women claimed abortion was a make-or-break point for their vote.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, ceding to the role abortion might play in costing him women\u2019s votes, attempted to take a centrist stance on the problem to mixed reviews. Anti-abortion groups and lawmakers have denounced the former president\u2019s comments that abortion should be left to individual states, but they have not abandoned Trump either.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republican strategists emphasized that one of Trump\u2019s biggest concerns in a post-verdict world is how independent voters will react to Trump\u2019s legal problems. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the real key number to watch in this race is going to be what is the impact on third party voters,\u201d said\u00a0national Republican strategist Brian Seitchik. \u201cIf you look at the [Robert F.] Kennedy voters, a lot of them look like disillusioned Democrats unhappy with Biden\u2019s running of the country. Are they going to hold their nose and move from Kennedy to Biden, in an effort to quote \u2018stop Trump\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/06\/trump-conviction-independent-voters-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a> from the nonprofit group The 19th News and SurveyMonkey released this month showed 47% of independent women strongly or somewhat agreed with the verdict, while 13% strongly or somewhat disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>But as Noem tries maneuvering back into Trump\u2019s vice presidential list, she\u2019ll have to contend with a boss who is not keen on being upstaged in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-is-open-new-york-is-closed-and-ny-has-more-covid-deaths\/\" title=\"Florida Is Open, New York Is Closed, And NY Has More COVID Deaths\">national media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking at how Trump has historically behaved, he doesn\u2019t want anyone that\u2019s going to necessarily outshine him,\u201d said Roe. \u201cI think one of the mistakes that Kristi Noem made before she wrote the stupidest book of all time is like she was so thirsty about it, and she just clearly was auditioning for it like it was a beauty pageant.
