Despite his age and the \u2063sweltering heat, McCormick, who required this job to\u2062 supplement his insufficient Social Security income,\u200d continued to impress with\u2062 his dedication. His situation changed when he encountered Karen Swensen, \u200ba former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizonas-democratic-secretary-of-state-running-for-governor\/\" title=\"Arizona\u2019s Democratic Secretary Of State Running For Governor\">local news anchor<\/a>, who leveraged her community influence by initiating a GoFundMe campaign. The \u2063effort was immensely\u2062 successful, raising \u2063over $220,000 \u200bin under \u200c24 hours, ensuring McCormick could comfortably retire. However, the veteran chose \u2063to keep working, valuing the routine and purpose his job provided. I try to be nice to them or polite to them\u00a0really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCormick\u2019s job isn\u2019t just for fun, however \u2014 it\u2019s something he needs just to keep food on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Or, at least, it was something he needed until he met former local Louisiana news anchor Karen Swensen.<\/p>\n<p>After meeting the upbeat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/american-wwii-veteran-makes-heartbreaking-admission-d-day-event-feel-like-foreigner-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">veteran<\/a> and learning about his financial situation, Swensen decided to use her influence to give McCormick the means to retire.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Dillon McCormick, a 90-year-old Air Force veteran, was working outside in the sweltering Louisiana heat when he caught the attention of journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karenswensen?\">@karenswensen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Swensen got the community to rally around him. They told <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidBegnaud?\">@DavidBegnaud<\/a> about their chance encounter. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R2I1GfKLMO\">pic.twitter.com\/R2I1GfKLMO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS Mornings (@CBSMornings) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSMornings\/status\/1797621529439518951?\">June 3, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Swensen set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/help-usaf-veteran-dillon-mccormick-retire-at-90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GoFundMe<\/a> account for McCormick, detailing her experiences meeting the man in a plea for others to pitch in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should the government do more for our veterans?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cToday, Memorial Day, in 90-degree heat (with a heat index of 103(!) thanks to the humidity), I watched a 90-year-old UNITED STATES AIR FORCE VETERAN collect and push shopping carts at a Metairie, Louisiana grocery store. Back and forth, back and forth, stacking cart after cart, sometimes more than twenty at a time,\u201d Swensen wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. McCormick is working to EAT, he said. He needs $2500\/month to live and says he only gets $1100 from social security,\u201d Swensen continued. \u201cSo he must push carts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/over-200k-raised-for-elderly-veteran-pushing-shopping-carts-in-90-degree-heat-on-memorial-day\/\" title=\"0K+ Raised for Veteran Pushing Shopping Carts in 90-Degree Heat on Memorial Day\">triple digit heat<\/a> to make ends meet. He had the kindest smile and greatest attitude. He is grateful for his job and his work ethic speaks for itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a veteran of the United States Military. It\u2019s Memorial Day. It\u2019s hot. Mr. McCormick was born in 1933, making him a part of the Silent Generation. Please, America, let us be his voice. We can do this. No donation is too small. If we could raise even enough for him to retire for a year, it\u2019s something. Thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By May 28, less than 24 hours after the fund was set up, over $220,000 had been raised to put towards McCormick\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidenomics-americans-magic-number-retirement-50-since-biden-took-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retirement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He no longer has to push carts anymore \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019s stopping yet.<\/p>\n<p>After giving McCormick the news, he let WWL and his manager know he\u2019s not quite done with Winn-Dixie yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said I can keep my job..that\u2019s the most important thing.
