Gaines was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>This decision to drop charges\u2062 comes amid scrutiny of the D.C. prosecutor&#8217;s office, \u2064which has been actively pursuing\u2064 cases against those involved in the January 6 protests, including a 71-year-old woman referred to as the \u201cPraying\u200d Grandma.\u201d The police stated their inability to account \u2062for the\u2064 19 minutes between the carjacking and the crash, noting the lack of surveillance footage\u2063 despite the high\u2063 number\u200b of \u2063cameras in the area, raising questions \u200babout \u2063the\u200c handling and investigation\u200d of such serious\u2064 incidents.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Washington D.C. prosecutor\u2019s office that targeted January 6 protesters, including a 71-year-old great-grandmother known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kktv.com\/2024\/04\/08\/falcon-woman-known-praying-grandma-found-guilty-her-role-us-capitol-riot\/\">Praying Grandma<\/a>,\u201d decided to drop charges of kidnapping and murder against a young woman who carjacked a vehicle carrying a sick woman then crashed the car, resulting in the sick woman\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last week, Leslie Marie Gaines, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, was left in a Mazda SUV at MedStar Washington Hospital Center for a moment by her daughter, who went to get a wheelchair. \u00a0Kayla Kenisha Brown, 22, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/dc-carjacking-suspect-charged-with-murder-after-taking-suv-from-hospital-crashing-with-victim-inside-police\/3632442\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carjacked<\/a> the car and drove off. Eighteen minutes later, Brown crashed into the offices of the U.S. attorney and attorney general for Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brown was detained at the site. Gaines was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPolice can\u2019t account for the 19 minutes between the carjacking and the crash, saying they have no images of the SUV during that time,\u201d NBC Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/prosecutors-drop-murder-kidnapping-charges-in-dc-carjacking-case\/3636354\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, despite the fact that the area of the city in which Brown drove <a href=\"https:\/\/twitchy.com\/grateful-calvin\/2024\/06\/10\/two-tiered-justice-j6-prosecutor-drops-federal-charges-against-carjacker-after-just-three-days-n2397130\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> has a multitude of cameras from which video could be taken.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brown was initially charged with felony murder, kidnapping, and carjacking. But then the murder and kidnapping charges were dropped, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/prosecutors-drop-murder-kidnapping-charges-in-dc-carjacking-case\/3636354\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> because the medical examiner has not ruled on what caused Gaines\u2019 death. Adding kidnapping to the charge would result in more severe penalties against Brown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office stated that the investigation is ongoing,\u201d Fox5DC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5dc.com\/news\/judge-denies-bond-dc-woman-deadly-carjacking-crash-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Friday, noting that the judge has ordered a \u201cpreliminary competency screening for Brown, with another hearing set for June 20.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Matthew Graves, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, whose office prosecuted the January 6 protesters, has <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/news\/local\/january-6-2021-us-capitol-riot-insurrection-american-history-democracy-lasting-impact-politics-republican-presidential-election-donald-trump-three-years-later-extremists-proud-boys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> about those protesters, \u201cMuch work has been done to hold members of the mob accountable for the crimes they committed.\u201d He also opined, \u201cWe will never know all the weapons that were on the Capitol grounds because very few in the mob were actually arrested on Jan. 6.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, on the third anniversary of the January 6 protests, President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2024\/jan\/7\/doj-target-nonviolent-jan-6-protesters-who-did-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boasted<\/a>, \u201cSince that day more than 1,200 people have been charged for assaulting the Capitol.
