And who can blame us? Since President Joe Biden took office, inflation has skyrocketed, wage growth hasn\u2019t kept pace, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-adviser-admits-his-spending-will-cause-inflation-going-to-be-bumps-concerns-very-serious\/\" title=\"Biden Adviser Admits His Spending Will Cause Inflation: \u2018Going To Be Bumps,\u2019 Concerns \u2018Very Serious\u2019\">supply chain disruptions<\/a> are frequent and more and more Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, when we see what looks like a deal that could save us money, we jump on it.<\/p>\n<p>Retailers know this \u2014 and they know how to milk cash from the impulse as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpaving\u201d is a neologism that combines two words that should be opposites: \u201cspending\u201d and \u201csaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/doom-spending-bidenomics-blame-americas-crippling-spending-obsession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in this economy<\/a>, more and more retailers are finding ways to convince buyers that they can save a bit by spending a bit more.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not necessarily a new concept. Buy one, get one free. A credit card that gives you points. Add a few extra bucks to your Amazon basket and you get free shipping. Coupon codes. In-store \u201ccash.\u201d The list goes on and on.<\/p>\n<p>However, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/spaving-spending-to-save-cbs-news-explains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a> noted in a May 13 piece on the phenomenon, spaving \u201crarely benefits the consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, retailers\u2019 clever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gavin-newsom-explains-how-dangerous-ar-15s-are-right-before-he-points-one-at-his-cameraman\/\" title=\"Gavin Newsom Explains How Dangerous AR-15s Are \u2014 Right Before He Points One At His Cameraman\">marketing ploys<\/a> convince consumers they\u2019re getting a deal, when often they\u2019re just overspending,\u201d the outlet said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Have you noticed a dramatic increase in store prices?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI understand the appeal of getting to checkout and a notification pops up saying spend $10 more to get some perk,\u201d said Jacob Channel, a LendingTree senior economist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut 90 percent of the time, when you break it down, it doesn\u2019t make sense,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re not actually saving money if you are spending more of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetailers have always known this trick, and they\u2019re really good at what they do,\u201d added Rachel Cruze, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-8-best-affordable-beach-vacations-and-how-to-save-money-booking-them\/\" title=\"The 8 Best (Affordable) Beach Vacations \u2014 And How To Save Money Booking Them\">personal finance expert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know that if we put a sale on or offer free shipping if you spend \u2018X\u2019 amount, you\u2019ll spend more money,\u201d she said. \u201cPsychologically, they\u2019re good at knowing how to entice people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>None of this, of course, is illegal per se, unless it involves false advertising. In fact, this tactic has been around since time immemorial, but the fact we have a name for it is indicative of how widespread it\u2019s gotten.<\/p>\n<p>However, canny consumers need to be mindful about just who is benefiting from these \u201cdeals.\u201d Almost all of the time, it isn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/walmart-sees-uptick-sales-dont-let-biden-gaslight-means-healthy-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the consumer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see different examples like that all throughout the economy,\u201d author Bryan Kuderna told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/finance-expert-sounds-alarm-spaving-trend-old-trap-new-name-hitting-wallet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd where it hurts the consumer is if it encourages them to essentially waste money to buy more than it\u2019s necessary, just so that they feel like, \u2018OK, now I\u2019m getting the deal,&#8217;\u201d Kuderna said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re all just different marketing ploys to get consumers to buy more, and in certain instances that works great,\u201d he added. \u201cIf we\u2019re using coupons to get what we need, and we also got a bargain at the same time, then certainly it\u2019s a win-win. But as we see so many times \u2026 it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the exact numbers on how much \u201cspaving\u201d costs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-killing-economy-inflation-remains-high-consumer-spending-weakens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American consumers<\/a> are difficult to ascertain, there are a few eye-popping statistics that indicate just how bad the problem has gotten under the current administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom 2021 to the end of 2023, credit balances jumped 47% \u2013 the steepest three-year climb on record. Credit analysts also predict the 2024 first quarter credit card debt will likely smash record highs,\u201d Fox Business said.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/06\/04\/heres-how-spaving-could-hurt-your-finances-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a> noted that between March 2023 and March 2024, companies had increased temporary price reductions by 72 percent and promotions were up 15 percent. If \u201cspaving\u201d weren\u2019t a phenomenon, of course, that would mean consumers would have more money to put away. However, the April personal savings rate was only 3.6 percent, down from an all-time high of 32 percent in April 2020, at the height of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers are hyperreactive to deals because they feel like they have less money than they\u2019ve ever had,\u201d Melissa Minkow, director of retail strategy at consulting firm CI&#038;T, told CNBC. \u201cIt\u2019s just a weird mix of variables that is creating this very unique retail environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/impact-bidenomics-memorial-day-weekend-prices-skyrocket-since-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the economy is lousy<\/a>, there\u2019s the tendency to jump at any opportunity to save money.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s worth remembering that corporations aren\u2019t just offering these deals because they\u2019re nice and want to take a load off your finances. As with casinos, the bedrock reality is that the house always wins in the end.<\/p>\n<p>So, how to avoid \u201cspaving\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is simple and intuitive, if perhaps harder to follow than it sounds. To quote Kuderna, \u201cbuy what you intend to buy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t buy what you feel pressured to buy,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s when you become almost like a victim of the marketing ploy. And that\u2019s obviously good for the retailer but not good for the consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that may feel difficult in the era of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidenomics-national-burger-chain-considers-chapter-11-bankruptcy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bidenomics<\/a>, where any potential \u201cdeal\u201d is easy to jump on before you even think about it.<\/p>\n<p>Do yourself a favor, however: Pause, reflect and then think of what the <em>real<\/em> cost of \u201cspaving\u201d will be.
