The state, which previously \u2063had a $16 minimum wage, saw nearly 10,000 jobs lost as fast\u200b food companies \u200cadjusted staffing in anticipation of the wage increase. The\u200c new law, which was \u2064a compromise established\u200c by Governor Gavin Newsom and legislators, also formed a Fast Food Council to administer\u2062 yearly wage increases tied to the Consumer Price Index until 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Several major fast \u2063food brands,\u2063 including Pizza Hut, Subway, and Burger King, have responded by either cutting jobs, reducing \u2062employee hours, or accelerating automation. CABIA published a full-page &#8220;In Memoriam&#8221; ad\u200c to highlight these adverse impacts, featuring statements from various business owners \u2064about the changes they&#8217;ve \u2063implemented to cope with increased labor costs. The exact number of job losses is still unclear and will be further analyzed as new state figures \u200bare released. Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span> \u00a0June 10, 2024 at 5:02am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The California Business and Industrial Alliance trade group reported that it analysis of fast food employment in California found a net loss of nearly 10,000 jobs since the state enacted its $20 minimum wage law last year.<\/p>\n<p>The state had already had a $16 minimum wage in place before the new law, <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AB1228<\/a>, was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 28, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In fact Newsom had previously signed a $22 minimum wage bill into law that would have mandated annual increases to the minimum wage thereafter, but agreed to the $20 figure as a \u201ccompromise\u201d to be effective April 1, 2024, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.callaborlaw.com\/entry\/california-reaches-a-fast-food-compromise-increasing-minimum-wage-for-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Labor &#038; Employment Law Blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new law also established a \u201cFast Food Council\u201d to set annual increases to the minimum wage for fast food workers through 2029, capped by increases to the Consumer Price Index \u2014 which is likely to be high until i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-killing-economy-inflation-remains-high-consumer-spending-weakens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nflation numbers<\/a> start coming down.<\/p>\n<p>CABIA\u2019s analysis found that the AB 1228 had already resulted in the lost of 9,500 by January, as fast food companies began making staffing adjustments months before it went into effect.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/cabia.org\/app\/uploads\/240604_CABIA_USATodayAd_InMemoriam-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an ad<\/a> called \u201cIn Memoriam: Victims of Newsom\u2019s Minimum Wage\u201d and paid for by the organization to publicize its findings, the trade group highlighted several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/recession-looming-major-fast-food-chain-warns-layoffs-coming-matter-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fast food<\/a> companies and their labor decisions.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/1100-pizza-hut-delivery-drivers-set-get-axe-ahead-blue-state-minimum-wage-hike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pizza Hut<\/a>, two large franchise owners controlling hundreds of California locations eliminated all delivery drivers, the ad states, citing information from Business Insider. More than 1,200 drivers were impacted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/subway-shrink-smallest-size-years-californias-20-minimum-wage-major-damage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Subway<\/a> closed 733 stores throughout the U.S., opened 396 new stores and \u201creacquired\u201d 79 others, for a net loss of 443 stores, the ad said, citing the New York Post. CABIA said that unnamed \u201cexperts\u201d argued that such downsizing \u201ccould continue as the chain\u2019s Californa shops face an increased minimum wage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A franchise owner who controlled 140 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/burger-king-n-others-raise-prices-significantly-2-days-californias-20-minimum-wage-kicks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burger King<\/a> locations in the state planned to \u201cslash worker\u2019 hours and expedite the rollout of self-service kiosks to cut down on labor costs in response to the state\u2019s new $20 minimum wage,\u201d the ad said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is a higher minimum wage detrimental to workers?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe have kiosks in probably about 25% of our restaurants today,\u201d the Burger King franchisee, Harshraj Ghai, told CABIA. \u201cHowever, the other 74% are going to have kiosks in the next probably 30 to 60 days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t move fast enough on this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>CABIA also cited Scott Roderick, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mcdonalds-loses-big-mac-name-rights-chicken-sandwich-shocking-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McDonald\u2019s<\/a> franchisee who controls 18 California restaurants, as telling the New York Post that he\u2019s had to \u201crethink his business strategy in the wake of the new law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is more than extraordinary labor costs stressing restaurants P&#038;Ls right now,\u201d Roderick said.<\/p>\n<p>The ad also cited Cinnabon\/Auntie Anne\u2019s, El Pollo Loco, Excalibur Pizza, Mod Pizza, Rubio\u2019s, Vitality Bowls, and other businesses as having to shutter locations, cut worker hours, hiking menu prices and increasing automation in response to the new wage law.<\/p>\n<p>The precise number of layoffs remains cloudy, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/fr\/trade-group-finds-10000-fast-food-jobs-lost-since-new-20-minimum-wage-for-fast-food-employees-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Globe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring this entire time, from signing in September 2023 to adoption in April to today, the question of how many employees were affected has remained,\u201d the outlet reported. \u201cState figures won\u2019t tell anything until next year, while exact numbers of layoffs per restaurant location has been largely muddled because of some locations normally firing people or hiring employees or new locations opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Kelly, whom the Globe described as \u201ca job placement specialist who helps food service workers transition into other careers,\u201d told the outlet that the impacts of the layoffs can be greater than the statistics reveal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the sad thing is a lot of those people needed these jobs,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cSome are kids getting their first summer job or paying for college. Others are people in need of a second or third jobs to make ends meet. Others need to supplement retirement, or worse, need to work still because they have no retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll look at state figures when they come out, but through CABIO\u2019s findings, it is at 10,000,\u201d Kelly continued. \u201cThat\u2019s a lot of jobs people needed. That\u2019s a lot of people facing eviction now or having to decide between food and medicine. That\u2019s a lot of people who lose out on valuable job experience. You\u2019re hurting every generation from Gen Z to the Silent Generation here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was such a destructive law, and now we are starting to see the first figures from it.
