Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 9, 2024 at 7:08am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>They\u2019re not even trying to hide it anymore.<\/p>\n<p>After a week where the polls didn\u2019t give the Biden-Harris ticket the bump Democrats were hoping for, Vice President Kamala Harris escalated her criticism of presumptive GOP presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump on Saturday, arguing his conviction on 34 questionable felony counts in a Manhattan court ought to be \u201cdisqualifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speech, given at a Democratic Party dinner Saturday in Detroit, gave Harris the opportunity to up the rhetoric over what she termed Trump\u2019s \u201cattacks\u201d on the justice system, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/06\/08\/kamala-harris-trump-conviction-00162403?cid=apn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know why he complains? Because the reality is, cheaters don\u2019t like getting caught,\u201d Harris said in a copy of the speech Politico reviewed in advance.<\/p>\n<p>Politico noted that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-defector-emails-pipeline-to-obama-admin-seen-as-currency\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden Defector Emails: 'Pipeline' to Obama Admin Seen as 'Currency'\">vice president<\/a>, \u201cwho has long highlighted her prosecutorial record and service as California attorney general on the campaign trail, outlines in the remarks how a jury made a unanimous decision to convict the former president on 34 counts of falsifying business records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe notes that Trump\u2019s defense was able to participate in selecting both jurors and witnesses, in a rebuke of his allegations that he was not treated fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply put, Donald Trump thinks he is above the law,\u201d Harris said during the speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis should be disqualifying for anyone who wants to be president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, as for conservative allegations that the Biden administration had been tacitly trying to influence the outcome, Harris called these \u201clies.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will Trump win in November?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since we can expect to hear this a lot over the next few months, we should probably go over exactly why this is arrant bunkum.<\/p>\n<p>First, defendants who believe they were unjustly convicted have every right to speak out against the conviction. In this case, it was a politicized case that could have been brought any time over the past few years but \u2014 and here\u2019s a surprise \u2014 just so happened to take place during the heat of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/casey-desantis-launches-national-campaign-mamas-for-desantis-in-iowa\/\" title=\"Casey DeSantis launches 'Mamas For DeSantis' campaign nationwide, starting in Iowa.\">presidential season<\/a>. No coincidence whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, the Biden administration continues to insist that Trump and his allies accept the Manhattan kangaroo court verdict, saying Trump only taking issue with it because \u201ccheaters don\u2019t like getting caught.\u201d These are the kinds of things that happen in dictatorships and <a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/politics-current-affairs\/what-kakistocracy-means-and-who-were-the-most-kakistocratic-in-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kakistocracies<\/a> that are nominally democratic \u2014\u00a0 not in the United States of America.<\/p>\n<p>As for the fairness of the trial, yes, Trump\u2019s attorneys were afforded the same rights as any other defendant \u2014 I mean, except for an openly politicized prosecution only identifying what a large part of the alleged crime actually <em>was <\/em>during the closing stretch of the trial, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-matt-gaetz-torches-biden-ag-judge-merchans-daughter-profiting-off-trump-prosecution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">openly biased judge<\/a> instructing the jury that its members didn\u2019t even need to agree <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-merchan-issues-last-minute-jury-instruction-designed-convict-trump-even-jurors-dont-agree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on which crime<\/a> Trump allegedly committed to find him guilty, and the fact that the venue was one of the most virulently anti-Trump, anti-Republican jurisdictions in the country.<\/p>\n<p>But other than <em>that <\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, as for whether the Biden administration had any involvement in this, we haven\u2019t had a proper explanation as to why a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/stephanopoulos-goes-crazy-trump-attorney-points-obvious-manhattan-verdict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Justice official<\/a> under Biden joined Bragg\u2019s prosecution team straight from the DOJ. Or why the White House held a rally near the courtroom with actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/robert-de-niro-loses-award-wild-anti-trump-rant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert De Niro<\/a> as a surrogate.<\/p>\n<p>Then, as for this being \u201cdisqualifying,\u201d apparently Kamala\u2019s expertise is in prosecution, not the Constitution. There\u2019s nothing disqualifying about being found guilty of a felony, particularly if there are solid grounds for appeal, if one wants to run for president. Most famously, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bill-oreilly-good-news-trump-even-convicted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">socialist Eugene Debs<\/a> ran for president from prison in 1920, and took home a not-insignificant 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p>This is a feature, not a bug, from our Founders: They realized the possibility of kneecapping the political opposition via political prosecutions. In retrospect, we should probably be shocked it took over 200 years for an administration to work up the gumption to actually <em>do it<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as for <em>why<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kamala-harris-jimmy-kimmel-live-appearance-repeatedly-interrupted-screaming-code-pink-hecklers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kamala<\/a> is banging on about how the verdict was \u201cdisqualifying,\u201d she \u2014 and everyone else in the White House \u2014 has seen the first wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-big-biden-panic-the-president-is-trailing-but-perhaps-the-guilty-verdict-against-trump-will-save-him\/\" title=\"Biden's Challenge: Trailing President Hopes Trump Verdict Will Turn the Tide\">post-conviction polling<\/a>, and it\u2019s not looking good for the ticket \u2014 in fact, it\u2019s looking like a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly worrisome for Team Biden is a pair of polls out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-conviction-deals-fatal-blow-biden-makes-blue-states-look-like-swing-states-new-data-arrives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nevada and Virginia<\/a>, two marginally swing states that tend to go Democrat in presidetial elections. In the Fox News polls, Trump was up in Nevada by five points and the two were tied in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>In both cases, the polls were taken after the guilty verdict was handed down in Manhattan. And they underscore just how<\/p>\n<p>You can guess why the lies are coming like an Obama-era gun-walking program: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/republicans-furious-atf-posts-huge-update-firearms-associated-operation-fast-furious-preserve-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fast and furious<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of the vice president\u2019s rhetoric, in other words, is ringing hollow for anyone who isn\u2019t among the faithful. For the rest of us, this has been a giant waste of time, resources and democratic credibility.<\/p>\n<p>But by this point, she doesn\u2019t have much else.
