Byron Donalds of Florida defended his recent comments about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joy-reid-clashes-with-byron-donalds-on-jim-crow-comments\/\" title=\"Joy Reid confronts Byron Donalds over Jim Crow remarks\">black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bill-gates-wants-privacy-but-divorce-is-not-a-private-matter\/\" title=\"Bill Gates Wants \u2018Privacy,\u2019 But Divorce Is Not A Private Matter\">marriage rate<\/a><\/a> during the Jim\u200c Crow era in a heated exchange with MSNBC anchor\u200b Al\u200d Sharpton. Donalds appeared on PoliticsNation to clarify his \u200bremarks, which \u200dhave\u2062 been criticized by many on the Left. He maintained that he was \u200dsimply stating an empirical fact\u200d about the higher marriage rates for black families during that time period. Sharpton offered him\u200d a chance\u200d to apologize\u2063 for any misinterpretations of his words, but Donalds \u2064stood by\u200b his statement and denied any intention to sanitize \u2064the injustices of Jim Crow.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/byron-donalds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Byron Donalds<\/a> (R-FL) continued to defend his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3032234\/joy-reid-clashes-with-byron-donalds-on-jim-crow-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"comments on the marriage rate\">comments on the marriage rate<\/a> during the Jim Crow era during a contentious conversation with MSNBC anchor <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/al-sharpton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Al Sharpton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Donalds appeared on MSNBC\u2019s <em>PoliticsNation<\/em> on Saturday after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3029355\/hakeem-jeffries-byron-donalds-jim-crow-black-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"event in Philadelphia \">event in Philadelphia <\/a>earlier this week when he discussed how the black marriage rate was higher back then than it is now. His comments have come under fire by many on the Left, who have interpreted the remark to be about how Jim Crow laws benefitted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">black people<\/a> at the time despite the fact that they kept them in segregation and prohibited them from voting.\u00a0Sharpton offered Donalds another opportunity to respond to the backlash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy response is that it\u2019s very interesting how people can just lie and mischaracterize what I said,\u201d Donalds said.\u201d I never said or insinuated anything about Jim Crow being better. Just was talking about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>marriage<\/a> rates of black families in America during that time period. It\u2019s an empirical fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean to in any way infer that the families, black families were better in Jim Crow, I mean, I\u2019ve said things that I later said I shouldn\u2019t have said,\u201d Sharpton said. \u201cCan\u2019t you own that even sanitizing Jim Crow, even if that wasn\u2019t your intention, was to say that\u2019s my intention, I\u2019m sorry for using those words?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, first of all, I never sanitized Jim Crow. I was just talking about the era in which black marriage rates were higher than they were during the great\u00a0society and every other point in American history,\u201d Donalds responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, look, look, you and I have mutual friends. People say you\u2019re a straight shooter. We may disagree on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>politics<\/a>. I\u2019m giving you the benefit of the doubt,\u201d Sharpton said. \u201cBut look, you were born in Brooklyn, you went down into the South, went to Florida state, you have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exposing-the-lefts-dishonesty-about-critical-race-theory-criticism\/\" title=\"Exposing The Left\u2019s Dishonesty About Critical Race Theory Criticism\">interracial marriage<\/a>, you\u2019re the congressman of a district that\u2019s not a black district. I mean, how can you even live with yourself acting like Jim Crow was a good era or better era for blacks? What happened to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donalds continued to assert that he did not say that the Jim Crow era was better for black people or express any nostalgia for the era.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Florida representative is over the state\u2019s 16th district, which is almost one-fifth Latino, and 5% black, 3% mixed, and the remaining majority white. Additionally, the district reports another one-fifth of its population have <a href=\"http:\/\/censusreporter.org\/profiles\/50000US1219-congressional-district-19-fl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"never been married\">never been married<\/a>. Still, a 57% majority are married.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2022\/07\/marriage-prevalence-for-black-adults-varies-by-state.html#:~:text=By%202020%2C%20these%20figures%20rose,and%2047.5%25%20for%20Black%20women.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Census Bureau<\/a>, nationwide, over a third of black men and over a quarter of black women were never married in 1970.
