Both\u200c Cuellar&#8217;s defense team and federal prosecutors have \u2063requested the postponement, and the trial will now take place next year in Houston. Cuellar and his wife are facing charges of conspiracy and\u200d bribery related to their connections\u2064 with Azerbaijan. Federal prosecutors allege that the couple accepted over\u2064 half a million dollars in exchange for \u2062Cuellar to introduce pro-Azerbaijan\u2063 legislation in Congress and give a\u2064 speech in support of\u2062 the country. (AP Photo\/Jose Luis Magana)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, were indicted on conspiracy and bribery charges in connection to their ties to Azerbaijan. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bribe payments were allegedly laundered, pursuant to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-henry-cuellar-releases-statement-after-being-indicted-on-federal-charges\/\" title=\"Henry Cuellar, a Democrat, Issues Statement Post Federal Charges Indictment\">sham consulting contracts<\/a>, through a series of front companies and middlemen into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alex-jones-infowars-files-for-bankruptcy-over-sandy-hook-defamation-lawsuits\/\" title=\"Alex Jones\u2019 Infowars Files For Bankruptcy Over Sandy Hook Defamation Lawsuits\">shell companies owned<\/a> by Imelda Cuellar, who performed little to no legitimate work under the contracts,\u201d according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/us-congressman-henry-cuellar-and-his-wife-charged-bribery-unlawful-foreign-influence-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"to the indictment \">to the indictment <\/a>against the couple.  <\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors allege the\u00a0couple accepted more than a half million dollars in bribes from an Azerbaijan-controlled energy company and a bank in Mexico in exchange for Cuellar to advance Azerbaijan-friendly legislation in Congress and for him to deliver a pro-Azerbaijan speech from the House floor. The legislation in question was related to Azerbaijan\u2019s territorial dispute with Armenia. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn exchange for the bribes paid by the Mexican bank, Congressman Cuellar allegedly agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-henry-cuellar-indicted-in-federal-corruption-investigation\/\" title=\"Democrat Henry Cuellar Faces Federal Corruption Indictment\">influence legislative activity<\/a> and to advise and pressure high-ranking U.S. Executive Branch officials regarding measures beneficial to the bank,\u201d the indictment states. <\/p>\n<p>The longtime congressman and his wife have strongly refuted the claims against them and said they are \u201cinnocent of these allegations.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything I have done in Congress has been to serve the people of South Texas,\u201d Cuellar said. \u201cBefore I took action, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/henry-cuellar-proclaims-innocence-ahead-of-reported-doj-indictment\/\" title=\"Henry Cuellar asserts innocence prior to alleged DOJ indictment\">proactively sought legal advice<\/a> from the House Ethics Committee, who gave me more than one written opinion, along with an additional opinion from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ca-gov-newsom-orders-independent-probe-in-case-of-death-row-inmate-who-claims-cops-framed-him\/\" title=\"CA Gov.
