The photo\u200c not\u200c only inspired awe in its viewers, but it also had a significant impact on the environmental movement. \u200cSenator Mark Kelly, also\u2063 a retired NASA astronaut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/americans-remember-the-48th-annual-march-for-life\/\" title=\"Americans remember the 48th annual March for Life\">paid tribute<\/a> to Anders and his impact on future generations of explorers. The cause of the crash is still being investigated by the\u2064 National Transportation Safety Board\u200d and the Federal Aviation Administration. William Anders, the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/apollo-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Apollo 8\">Apollo 8<\/a> astronaut who took the iconic \u201cEarthrise\u201d photo showing the planet as a shadowed blue marble from space in 1968, was killed Friday when the plane he was piloting alone plummeted into the waters off the San Juan Islands in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Washington\">Washington<\/a> state. He was 90.<\/p>\n<p>His son, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Greg Anders, confirmed the death to the<em> Associated Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family is devastated,\u201d Greg Anders said. \u201cHe was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/video-unruly-man-subdued-after-allegedly-trying-to-enter-plane-cockpit\/\" title=\"VIDEO: 'Unruly' Man Subdued After Allegedly Trying to Enter Plane Cockpit\">great pilot<\/a> and we will miss him terribly.\u201d<br \/>William Anders has said the photo was his most significant contribution to the space program given the ecological philosophical impact it had, along with making sure the Apollo 8 command module and service module worked.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph, the first color image of Earth from space, is one of the most important photos in modern history for the way it changed how humans viewed the planet. He estimated there was about 1-in-3 chance that the crew wouldn\u2019t make it back and the same chance the mission would be a success and the same chance that the mission wouldn\u2019t start to begin with. It is now based at a regional airport in Burlington and features 15 aircraft, several antique military vehicles, a library, and many artifacts donated by veterans, according to the museum\u2019s website. Two of his sons helped him run it.<\/p>\n<p>The couple moved to Orcas Island, in the San Juan archipelago, in 1993 and kept a second home in their hometown of San Diego, according to a biography on the museum\u2019s website.
