This legislation has\u200b also been linked to Proposition 47, a measure that reduced penalties for \u200bcertain crimes. Democrats plan to add an amendment to the retail theft\u2063 bill that would cancel it if Proposition\u2063 47 is passed in the upcoming election. This move has sparked criticism from Republicans\u2062 and \u2063has raised \u200dconcerns about the influence of politics on crime policy.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Earlier this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>California<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3027389\/california-tries-crack-down-stolen-goods-san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>introduced legislation<\/a> to curb retail theft in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> San Francisco<\/a>, but their tactics have angered some Republicans because Democrats are using the legislation to try and kick another crime bill off the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener unveiled SB 925, which would give police authority to issue citations to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-tries-to-crack-down-on-stolen-goods-loophole-in-san-francisco\/\" title=\"California aims to close loophole on stolen goods in San Francisco\">people selling commonly stolen items<\/a> without a permit.\u00a0San Francisco Mayor London Breed was also at the event in support of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also has the purpose of putting pressure on those wanting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/steve-scalise-looks-to-rally-support-behind-sweeping-energy-cost-reduction-bill\/\" title=\"Steve Scalise looks to rally support behind sweeping energy cost reduction bill\">roll back parts<\/a> of Proposition 47, a measure dubbed as \u201csoft on crime\u201d because it changed some felonies to misdemeanors and lowered penalties in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats plan to add an \u201cinoperability clause\u201d amendment to the retail theft bill that would cancel the new laws if voters pass the statewide proposition in November \u2014 unless the ballot measure to roll back is withdrawn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-06-06\/california-ballot-retail-theft-legislation-changes-proposition-47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>. If it is not withdrawn, California voters will decide on the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act, which is the measure to roll back parts of Proposition 47, in November. This move puts pressure on the Californians for Safer Communities Coalition, the group behind the ballot measure, to withdraw it.<\/p>\n<p>Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas\u2019s spokesman, Nick Miller, told <em>Politico<\/em> the amendments \u201care meant to ensure, no matter what voters decide, that there are no conflicts and inconsistencies in policies that move forward \u2014 and that criminals are held accountable and police have the necessary tools to keep California safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans in the statehouse have accused Democratic leadership of \u200b\u200b\u201dplay[ing] politics with public safety\u201d and \u201cforcing our constituents into a false choice between legislative reforms and necessary modifications to Proposition 47.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are trying to fast-track the bill as the June 27 deadline to remove measures from the ballot approaches. Those backing the ballot measure have remained firm against pressure from legislators. The ballot initiative would revise drug penalties, making possession of fentanyl a felony, and repeat offenders who steal for a third time could serve up to three years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Legislators are looking to address retail theft and focus on protecting store owners and workers.
