Breed&#8217;s focus on funding the police department in an effort to tackle a substantial deficit has\u2062 triggered discussions among advocacy\u200b groups pushing for\u200d a fairer distribution of resources\u200b to uphold \u200bessential services for the city&#8217;s\u2064 populace.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"San Francisco\">San Francisco<\/a> nonprofit groups are sounding the alarm after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/london-breed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"San Francisco\">Democratic Mayor London Breed\u2019s<\/a> newest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sf.gov\/news\/mayor-london-breed-releases-balanced-budget-delivers-key-city-priorities-move-san-francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"budget proposal\">budget proposal<\/a> threatens to leave many of them out in the cold. <\/p>\n<p>Breed\u2019s plan, which was released last week, attempts to close a nearly $800 million two-year deficit while making good on campaign promises to beef up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3023146\/london-breed-millions-more-police-budget-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"city's police department\">city\u2019s police department<\/a>, reduce homelessness, and spark the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3029303\/london-breed-pushes-bond-measure-san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"economic revitalization\">economic revitalization<\/a> of downtown San Francisco. <\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>San Francisco Mayor London Breed speaks to supporters at an election night party, Tuesday, March, 5, 2024, in San Francisco. V\u00e1squez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that the San Francisco budget will be balanced on the backs of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eric-adams-wins-democrat-primary-for-nyc-mayor\/\" title=\"Eric Adams wins Democrat primary for NYC mayor\">working class residents<\/a> of San Francisco,\u201d\u00a0the People\u2019s Budget Coalition, which formed in response to last year\u2019s budget process, said in a statement following Breed\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0group has taken issue with the mayor\u2019s plan to bolster police staffing with a 6% budget increase, which lifts the agency\u2019s budget to a record $821.6 million. <\/p>\n<p>They warned that the money for law enforcement comes at the expense of other city-backed initiatives including\u00a0after-school programs, community gardens, and workforce development classes, the <em>San Francisco Examiner<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/sf-nonprofits-blast-mayor-breed-budget-warn-of-painful-cuts\/article_e3500efe-237d-11ef-b0cf-97720fa47ad9.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"reported\">reported<\/a>. The programs, the nonprofit groups argue, enrich communities and in some cases help prevent some of the underlying issues of poverty and other catalysts that could lead to criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not possible to claim to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-faces-68-billion-deficit-in-2024\/\" title=\"California's deficit projected at B by 2024\">prioritize economic recovery<\/a>, homelessness and public safety while cutting funding for the organizations that have a proven track record of keeping our communities afloat,\u201d the PBC statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The group calculates that Breed\u2019s budget would lead to a $39 million reduction in grant funding for programs that help the city\u2019s youth and families from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Nonprofit leaders say the\u00a0lack of funds could force them to lay off staff who work for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gun-control-groups-lash-out-at-biden\/\" title=\"Gun-Control Groups Lash Out at Biden\">violence intervention programs<\/a>, restorative justice programs, and summer learning enrichment programs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNonprofit organizations are the reason why the homeless get food, housing, and rehabilitation,\u201d\u00a0 Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 29 head Althea Antoine <a href=\"https:\/\/48hills.org\/2024\/06\/another-breed-budget-problem-nonprofit-workers-are-left-behind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> <em>48 Hills<\/em>. \u201cI feel like a dog who is thrown a bone. Take what you\u00a0get and be happy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Union representative Jane Bosio told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> on Thursday that it\u2019s hard to ignore the possible motivations behind Breed\u2019s budget decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe moves she is making with this budget, that it\u2019s overly underproviding\u00a0for nonprofits and vastly overproviding for health and safety programs such as the police and sheriff\u2019s departments, is really aimed at quieting her critics and boosting her in the polls in a difficult election year,\u201d Bosio said. \u201cThe one thing that has been very obvious about the mayor is that she is very moved by the media she receives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bosio added that as nonprofit gorups brace for cuts, Breed has the power to step in and help but won\u2019t. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s much more concerning to her, it appears, what her image is and what her favorability is as opposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/amc-theatres-cancels-de-transitioner-film-following-trans-groups-de-platforming-campaign\/\" title=\"AMC Theatres cancels film after pressure from trans group.\">making long-term\u00a0decisions<\/a>,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Breed spokeswoman Parisa Safarzadeh told the <em>San Francisco Examiner<\/em> that the mayor\u2019s proposal sustains funding for many of San Francisco\u2019s homelessness programs.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0budget also includes $133.5 million in funding for the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing that will go in part toward expanding housing options for families and adolescents.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtoexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER \">CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The budget would also grow San Francisco\u2019s programs focused on early child care and education with an additional $120 million in new investments,\u00a0Safarzadeh said. <\/p>\n<p>Breed has faced an onslaught of criticism from her rivals in the mayor\u2019s race, two of whom are sitting supervisors who will vote for or against her budget. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Francisco nonprofits alarmed as Mayor London Breed&#8217;s latest budget proposal risks cutting them off.
