In May, a <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SSCP-Staff-Memo_Morens-5.22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memo<\/a> the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic released suggested Morens inappropriately deleted records and colluded with agency officials to escape requests made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) law.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-964788182\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c1c141398f805b00885494c40de87b2e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c1c141398f805b00885494c40de87b2e\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI learned from our foia lady here how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-materials-may-implicate-fauci-in-aides-emails-scandal\/\" title=\"Fresh evidence suggests Fauci's involvement in aide's email controversy\">make emails disappear<\/a> after i am foia\u2019d,\u201d Morens wrote in one email, and referenced a \u201c\u2018secret\u2019 back channel\u201d to communicate with Fauci in another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Morens took it upon himself to reach out to NIH\/NIAID\u2019s FOIA contacts and apparently devised methods for effectively shielding his communications from disclosure under FOIA,\u201d wrote PPT Director Michael Chamberlain in a <a href=\"https:\/\/protectpublicstrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PPT-NIH-FOIA-IG-Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to the HHS inspector general. \u201cIf that were not enough, it appears as though Dr. Morens sought to rope others into this scheme, establishing a \u2018secret back channel\u2019 through which he and his colleagues could communicate for the explicit purpose of making their communications fall outside the scope of what is traditionally subject to disclosure under FOIA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he testified on Capitol Hill last month, Morens <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/22\/us-news\/explosive-emails-show-top-nih-adviser-deleted-records-used-secret-back-channels-to-help-fauci-ecohealth-evade-covid-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laughed off <\/a>lawmakers\u2019 questions related to the allegations of ethical misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not aware that anything I deleted like emails was a federal record,\u201d said Morens. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-84d27dc0246fdc6a4527a23b750caa34 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-84d27dc0246fdc6a4527a23b750caa34\"><\/div>\n<p>Chamberlain said the emails released by House investigators leave the HHS inspector general \u201cno choice but to investigate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conduct described clearly violates the standards expected of public servants and is possibly illegal under FOIA,\u201d Chamberlain said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/protectpublicstrust.org\/press-releases\/watchdog-documents-testimony-call-for-investigation-of-whether-fauci-co-broke-law-by-operating-in-secret\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThe grim stakes of the pandemic make learning why they needed such secrecy a matter of life and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, who ran the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 1984 to 2022, distanced himself from the debacle involving Morens when he testified before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not do government business on my private email,\u201d Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/03\/us-news\/fauci-testifies-on-covid-19-origins-us-response-live-updates-fact-check-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, denying the existence of a \u201cback channel\u201d to speak with government colleagues.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d31618f64ce616e82974331ccddd0119 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d31618f64ce616e82974331ccddd0119\"><\/div>\n<p>Lawmakers also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/05\/faucis-testimony-reveals-the-inconsistencies-and-deceit-behind-u-s-covid-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pressed<\/a> Fauci about his demands for social lockdowns and repeated dismissals of alternative theories to explain the outbreak, such as a lab accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you agree that there was a push to downplay the lab leak theory?\u201d asked Rep.
